DISCOVERY of a NEW MOTOR
A correspondent of the Boston Herald write*
from Nashua, New Hampshire, as follows: “I now
barely announce the fact, and will give you the
particulars at another time, that a motive power
has been discovered and satisfactorily tested,
which, it is estimated, will not oulv be more effec
tive than sleam as a motive power, but which will
be eighty per cent, cheaper ! Think not that lam
romancing, for I • speak by the card ’ upon the best
authority.
“Tbe new motor, of which 1 speak, will be
found to be not only niore powerful than steam,
but will be worked with entire safety, itcan also
be used for every variety of mechanical purposes
—for turning the tiny lathe of the goldsmith, ope
rating the printer’s press, driving through the
deep's marine vessels, and even the ladies can use
it to whirl the wheels of their sewiug machines.
Itcan also be transferred to the kitchen, and there
be made to projaT the washing machine, thechurn,
and even to rock tbe cradle! I think 1 hear you
at'J your readers say, ‘ I don't believe it.’ Wait
auJ see if I have exaggerated—and you’ll not have
ti wait long. I repeal, (his motor, now distinctly
announced, has been thoroughly tested, and will
be ready m a lew’ days for practical use.”
Cork for In crowing Nails.—lt is stated bv a
correspondent of the M, dial and Surgical Journal
that cauterization with hot tallow is an immedi
ate cure for in growing nails. He says: ‘'The pa
tient on whom / !irst fried this was a young lady
who hid been unable to put on a shoe for sevet.il
mouths, and decidedly the worst case I had ever
•seen. The disease bad been of long standing.
The edge of the uail was deeply undermined ; the
granulations formed a high ridge, partly covered
with skin, aud pus constantly oozing from the
root of the nail; the whole toe was swollen, and
extremely tender aud painful. My mode of pro
ceeding was this: I put a very small piece of ta!-
luw m a spoon and heated it over a lamp until
it became very hot, and dropped two or three
drops between the uail and granulations. The ef
fect was almost magical. I’am and tenderness
were at ouce relieved, and in a few days the
granulations were all gone, the diseased parts
dry and destitute of feeling, and the edge of the
nail exposed so as to admit of being pared away
without any inconvenience. The cure was com
plele, and the trouble never returned. I have
tried this plan repeatedly since, with the same
satisfactory results. The operation causes little
if any pain, if tbe tallow is properly heated.

PHOT GUANO
FROM THE
SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
We offer this new GUANO
to the Planters of Georgia, in the
greatest confidence that it is the
best and cheapest Fertiliser yet
discovered. It is a NATURAL GU
ANO, imported in bulk, and sold
in its natural state, without
Grinding or Manipulation, which
is the best guarantee that Plan
ters can have that it is
pitch & uimmim.
Although it is essentially a
Phosphatic Guano, it has, in nd
dition to a large amount of Phos
phate of Lime—which renders it
a permanent Fertiliser—a suf
ficient proportion of the Sul
phates of Ammonia, Potash, and
Soda, and organic matter, rich in
Nitrogen, to secure for it prompt
anti efficient action upon the first
crop.
We obtained enough of it last
Spring to have it thoroughly
tested by some of the best Plan”
ters in the State. The certifi
cates of these Planters, together
with the Analyses of Prof. Jones,
Chemist to the Cotton Planters’
Association; Prof. Shepherd, of
the Charleston Medical College;
and Prof. Darby, of Alabama,
furnish convincing evidence of
its decided superiority to any
Fertiliser yet introduced into
this country. These evidences
are printed in Pamphlet form,
and will be furnished gratis on
application to our Agents, or to
us.
THIS GUANO
IS FREE FROM IMRD LUMPS.
The importers of this GU
ANO are bound to us under
heavy penalties to furnish us
with GUANO of fully as good
quality as the cargo Analysed
by Profs. Jones, Shepherd, and
Darby; and we pledge ourselves
that each cargo shall be critical-
ly Analysed upon arrival, and
unless found to be essentially
identical with those already re
ceived, we will either reject
them or sell them at a corres
pondingly less price.
This GUANO is put up in [
barrels of about 300 pounds, and
the price will be uniform, as fol
lows ; *4O per ton of 2,000
pounds, CASH, or $45, credit
until Ist of November, 1861,
without interest, in Savannah,
Ihe price at interior points will
lie the same, with necessary ex
penses added.
\\ hen sold on credit, city ac
ceptances will be required.
