Hy order of Gen. T-ragg, the attack was com

the cS’.reme right, and was taken up by the each
succeeding divti-i 'o to the lr.fr, reaching Long
sfeet’s left at 11 o clock, sun thus taking one
hoar for the wave 0! bat’le to roll fiom me end
of tha line to the other. On the right and in the
centre the attack was not uucccsstul in the early
part of the day. The enemy had messed a t eaty

superb style, aud fell upon ihe eoernv like u thus,

their ground, and fought with derpera’e gal.
meantime LoDg.Kre.-t had been steadily
pushing back the enemy on tha left, meeting
no check, and carrying everything before litre.
Under his orders, Buckner txteuted a success
ful flank movement, wDilat Hood and others
tnada a vigorous assauU ivt float:. The effect of
this combined attack was to ton* the Federate to
abandon that part of the field, and to seek a po

firmed their lines, h .wever, before the brigades
of Kershaw and Humuhiies, of ilcLvws’ divis*
Isa under command of; Kershaw, (HcLavrs not

a'desperate struggle ensued. Kershaw carried
the position again and again, and Ist it as often.
J. wd g evident that the enemy had the advantage
both in position and number?, but the brave Car
olinians and Mississippiens did not stop to count
the odds against them. Gen. Longs:reel very
-rjnerly, however, sent Graciev, Kelley's and
Trigg’s brigades of Preston’s heroic division, ta
their support. A vigorous end simultaneous as

driven, with great slaughter, fram the crest of
the ridge and down its side. Preston and his

Fiohi’.—M r e have to record this morning another
cavalry fight on the fine of ihß Rappabauut ek,
in which we tear from tbe reports that have
reached ih, onr own forces derived but little, if
any advantage. /I'bafiifht took place ou Tuesday
afternoon, near liberty Mills, in Madison county.
Oar force ts represented to consisted of the
brigades of Ocas. Fitzhogb and Jones, the
whole under the command of Geo. Stuart in
person.
The en#*my had advanced ia line of battle to
within a few a iies of Liberty Mills, when thev
were charged by »;nr cavalry. ‘Phe centre of the
Y'ankee hue gave way, and qur men, dashu.g
u' . ad, soon found themselves confronted by tae
tneir.y’s infantry, who opened lire upon them.—
Io the meantime, their cavalry closed in upon
Gcnffi’al Sfunrt’vflanks, nearly surrounding him.
Ilis men 1 allied, r, wever, and in u fi-*rco hand ‘o*
hitd fight, cut their way out. The extent of our
loss in the engagement is not known, being van
riously estimated &t from 125 to 400.
li is stated that our dead and badly wounded
were left m the cnxmv’s hands. The Yankee
loss Is reported to have been heavy, but tho state*
ments with referenco to it are wholly conjectural.
S ;Tentyneight Yankee prisoners captured in the
fight were brought down on the Central tram lust
night.
Our cavalrj had fallen buck to Liberty Mills.
A few of the wounded in'the tight of Tuesday
reached tba oily last night. It was doubtless the
cannonading in this fight which was heard by
passengers ut Gordousville on Tuesday, and
wb;ch gave rise to the belief that a general en*
gageuaent had begun.— Richmond insp,it:h , *2l.
