their relief.
Os the Conception nothing is known, find
it is probable that the number of people
with which she was crowded, with the 24

~~ LOUISVILLE.

With a view to eive a clear idea of our;
town abroad . we think it necessary, since
Hie usual criterion of judging its importance
is denied, to atMe that there are now in
Louisville ten considerable stores of dry
go ods, and groceries—a manufactory of cot
tons—one of b^ts—one of shoes and boots.
A’}d to these, furniture and carriages are
lo de here, painting, house carp nlering &
bHeksmithing art executed in ail their va-<
ri'ous brauches, together with other branches;
“of business important in a well regulated
community. There are no empty houses in.
Louisville, & building is going on. With re
fard to the Ogechee river, we confidently
ope that it will yet be made to answer
boat navigation—Should this great object
be (, cried into effect, Louisville will yet be
come a place of immense depot, and of
course, great trade. Borne Boats, heaVy
loaded with Cotton, Staves, &?. have al
ready descended this river, without acci
dent, and with little or no interruption.
We have given this article, with aview;
that people abroad may not think, (as those!
at a distan- e are apt to do) that the bare
ness of the columns of a newspapei 1 of adver
tisings is a proper criterion try which to
judge of the absence of mercantile capital,
or mechanical and manufacturing ii dustry.
Bitter complaints come to hand daily, of.
the want of proper attention to the demands j
of the war-worn soldier.—. This default we !
learn is entirely confined to the Southern de-.
parlm ,nt. The laws provide, (if tve mis 4
take not) that soldiers shall be paid
two months—-and in no ease tbeir pay shall
be, fnder any pretext, retained over three
months. How does it happen that some
of these poor fallows are kept out of their
money from 12 to 20 months ? We have
bo objection to Members of and all
Other public servants, being well paid.—hut
thick il passing strange that those who j
have fought the battles of their country j
should be thus shamefully neglected, while l
those who have control of the public nurse !
only “ feather their own nest.” —“ There’s
something rotten in the state of Denmark*” j

A soldier, who has fought and bled iu
the service of his country, has written a
letter from Smithville, 3NT. C. to his comrade
in this city, in which he complains, that he
has not received one cent of pay from the
United States for the last eighteen months ! \
This should be looked into, and should be *
reuaidied.
