ytsausßEiM Norway] March 10, Ist a
A singular occurrence took
place here on the 7th inst, -a per
don oi land, amounting to 120
English acres, and 60 feet deep,
slid with a tremendous crash, in
to the rivet* Mid, about a quarter
of a mile from Store Foss This
happened during a hard frost,(l3
deg. Reaumur) without giving
any previous notice ; and from
the q lantity of the ground being
clayey, with a moderate ascent
from the river, appears quite un
accountable. Os Idler church
dwelling house and bridge, which
stood on the spot not a vestage is
now to be seen—the ruins are ei
ther buried or dispersed. You
may form some idea of the force
with which this mass of earth
fell, when 1 tell you, that a con
siderable portion of it was thiewn
several hundred yd3 distant from
the river on the opposite bank,
where it destroyed two houses
with some cf the unfortunate in
habitants. The owner of Tiller
Farm perished by returning to
the house to look after one of his
children. It is not yet ascertain
ed how many lives are lost; eigh
teen are known to have been bu
ried or drowned, and 40 horses
besides cows, he Avery fine la’,
cf 17, who was to ha? e worked ii
I GUI* work, lost his life. One mast
saved himself in a remarkable
manner ; he was the foremost of
*4 or IS peasants, who were re
turning heme to Selbec, from
bringing the timber for buildings
‘-attached to onr work, and was so
near the spot, that he heard the
owner of Tiller cry for help— he
immediately resolved to retrace
his steps; the other poor wretches
endeavored to reach the shore
through a deep snow, and per
i;hed with their horses ; most of
them had two.
The man who saved himself
had a very good horse, and by
keeping himself full speed he es
caped on shore by btore Foss,
the river jnttsuing him close with
the rapidity of lightning—his lee
lings may be better conceived
th. an described during this remark
ab ! e race. Onr work has luckily
escaped uninjured, although
threatened with ruin. V. Krough
has otherwise suffered considera
biy, yet mostiv at Store Foss,
wh-re a Hour mill has quite disap
p ared, the saw mills almost de
stroyed, and dams carried away
to the amount of 2000/. A sum
mer house, which stood between
Great and Little Foss, a short dis
tance from the river, Was carrieu
in an upwright position, as it
stood on the shore, with two
b ats chained to it, and in that
maimer precipitated down Little
Foss. It is impossible for me to
‘'describe the singular appearance
‘all this had, and still has—the
Fiord is discolored with muddy
;'water to a great extent, And will
‘ probably continue so for months
We are willing to think the dan- 1
ger is now over, though this is* •
uncertain, until the stream cuts!
itself a nroner passage.
