The noblest object in the work* of art,
The brightest gem whsh nature chd impart;
The poia esseatiel in a Lawyer’s lease,
Tha well-known signal in a time of neacej
The ploughman when ho drives the plough,
The soldier’s fluty, and tbe lover’s vow,
Tbe phi net seen between the Earth ana I
Sun,
Tbe prize which merit never yet has woo;
The miser’s treasure, and tho badge of
Jews,
The Wife’s umbitioD, and the Farsou’s
dues:
Now if yoar nobler spirit can divine
A corresponding word For every ‘ins,
By ai these letters clearly will be shewn
A n ancient city of no era ll renown.
DR. FRANKLIN.
We have been favored with
the following curious observation
from the pen of Dr Franklin. Ii
Wit. found among a number of.,
remarkable manuscript, notes of
his written on the margin of a
pamphlet* called >4 Moral and Po
litical Reflections,” published in
London in 1770, and has never
before beer m.*de pub-ic.
il The difference” (between a
civilized and savage life) ** is not
30 great as may be imagined
Happiness is more generally and
equally diffused among savages
than in our civilized societies.—
No European who has once tasted
•savage life can afterwards bear to
jive in our societies. The care
a id labour of providing for arti
ficia! and fashionable wants—the
sight of so many rich wallowing
in superfluous plenty, whereby
30 many are kept poor and dis- j
pressed by want—the insolence |
of office—the snares and plagues :
of law—-and the restraints of cus* I
tom; all contribute to disgust them I
with whav. we call civil society.” |
’ The correctness of the doctor’s j
opinion may perhaps be disputed: !
we, however, give the observa- j
tion as it was found, without !
comment, more as a matter of;
curloshy than as an absolute trui- j
sin.— N.it. Register.
An Escape similar to that of\
Lav alette. When Cavades, king ;
of Persia, was imprisoned by his
subjects, in consequence of the
odious use of his authority, the
queen carried him whatever he j
stood in need of, but without ob- j
lairbng permission to see him.— j
The officer, by whom he was i
guarded, having Conceived a pas-1
ffion for her, gave her leave to j
write to her husband. She then j
requested that she might be allow- j
ed to visit him ; but the jailer to |
this favor attached certain condi-!
sions. The queen informed her
husband, who desired her to Hat
ter a passion which might be of so
much utility to them both. She
at last obtained an interview, in
which Cavades learned that a
faithful friend, named Sesoses,
had in readiness a body of guards,
who as soon as he should make
his escape, would accompany him
wherever he might think proper.
Inconsequence of this precaution
The necessary measures being
the queen dressed
herself in the king's clothes, and*
the latter escaped in the dress of
a female. The queen remained
a prisoner, and was treated rather
with severity than clemency.
