Qea, Bolivar’s Doi’eat eonli-med.
We learn from cap*, Baker, of
the brig llebecca, who arrived
here yesterday in 10 days from
St. Thomas, that a few days be*!
fore he sailed, a vessel arrived at
Chat place from the Spanish j
Maine, with a number of officers
who belonged to Gen. Bolivar’s
army; who, with the general,
•made theif escape and saved
their lives by flight. They sta
ted, that When the army landed at
Ocumare and took up its line of
march through the province of
Caracas, it consisted of 800 effec
tive men, and that out of this
Humber, only about 200 escaped
death. The populace through
out the country were highly enra
ged at a proclamation which the
general issued, setting the slaves
on the plantations free, and, in
stead of meeting patriots, as he
advanced into the interior, wil
ling to join his cause, he found
himself in the midst of a most-se
rious and sanguinary peasantry,
who, with the royal army , fell up
on him, and almost annihilated
his whole force.
A Drop in the Bucket.
The story of general Bolivar’s
defeat, admitting it to be true, is
not of sufficient importance to af
fect the fate of South American in
dependence in the smallest de
gree.—While f grieve that one
soldier of an independent army
has been lost, 1 am consoled by
reflecting oh the steady advance
ment of the general cause in the
extensive states of Mexico and
Buenos Ayres, Uc. The fortune
of the great and populous dis
tricts will decide that of the lesser.
Trom the means which will be
furnished to the patriots of La
Plata, Chilli, and Mexico, l con
fidently expect a thorough eman
cipation of all Spanish America
5n the course of this and- the en
suing year. The cause has gone t
forth, and it is not one petty fa.i-l
ure that shall arrest its effect. It
is sure as time— Columbian.
