POETICAL SELECTIONS.
extract
From the “ Wanderer of Switzerland,”
a Poem, lately published in England.
[.4 Wanderer of Switzerland, advanced in years,
accompanied by his wife, his daughter, and
her young children, emigrated from their cemn
try, in consequence of its subjugation by the
French in 1798. On their way, they stopt at
the cottage of a Shepherd, when the following
dialogue takes place .•]
Shepherd.
“ Wanderer! whither dost thou roam!
Weary Wanderer, old and grey !
Wherefore hast thou left thine horn#,
In the sun-set of thy day ?”
Wanderer.
*' In the sun-set of my day,
Stranger, I have lost my home ;
Weary, wandering, old and grey,
Therefore, therefore, do 1 roam.
“ Here mine arms a wife enfold,
Fainting in their weak embrace;
There my daughter’s charms behold,
Withering in that widow’d face.
“ These her infants—Oh ! their sir#,
Worthy of the race of Tell,
In the battle’s fiercest fire,
In his country's battle—fell!”
Shepherd.
" Switzerland, then, gave thee birth ?”
W ANDERER.
“ Aye—’twas Switzerland of yore:
But, degraded spot of earth,
Thou art Switzerland no more!
“ O’er thy mountains sunk in blood,
Are the waves of ruin hurl’d,
Like the waters of a Hood
Rolling round a buried world.”
Shepherd.
" Yet will time the deluge stop ;
Then may Switzerland be blest;
On St. Gothard’s hoary top,
Shall the Ark of Freedom rest.”
W ANDERER.
“ Mo!—lrreparably lost,
On the day that made us slaves,
Freedom’s Ark, by tempests tost,
Founder’d in the swallowing waves.”
Shepherd.
*' Welcome, Wanderer, as thou art,
All my blessings to partake;
Yet, thrice welcome to my heart,
For thine injured country’s sake.
” On the western hills afar,
Evening lingers with delight,
While she views her favorite star
Brightening on the brow of night.”

And one who can bridle her tongue.
If she has pelf,
She’s like myself;
No difference then will arise;
If not, I still
Endeavor will
Two jewels to find in her eyes.

A new species of' sharp shooting ,
Yesterday Lieut. C. Hammond, of
capt. Head’s company of Artillerists,
gave a specimen of sharp shooting
with a brass six pounder, that exceed
ed any th.ng of the kind that vve have
ever before witnessed, by the assistance
of a gunner’s quadrant of his own in
vention and construction, calculated for
artillery and cannon of any size of cali
ber, which, by one proof shot gives
the precise angle of perpendicular and
side variation from a point blank direc
tion, and by which any other shot at
the same distance and with the same
quantity of powder is regulated with
accuracy. In sixteen shots including
the proof shots, made at turkeys, at
the distance of two hundred, and two
hundred and fifty yards, one took effect
and carried away the turkey’s head,
and five other shots struck within the
compass of its feathers, and nearer the
Centre of its body than the one that
took effect; and three shots only of the
sixteen would have missed a man’s bo
dy. The only apparatus necessary for
accurate shooting is a platform perfect
ly horizontal for the wheels and trial
of the carriage, to prevent any varia
tion occasioned by the spring of the
powder in discharging the piece. In
course of the firing it was ascertained
that the wind of a six pound shot was
not so destructive as many of the spec
tators imagined. The turkey received
no material injury, from those shots
which did not actually strike it; altho’
the feathers were violently agitated and
the fowl in some instances, moved out
of its place. Lieutenant Hammond
has applied to Congress for a patent for
his quadrant, to which, in our opinion,
he has an undoubted claim. Good
judges consider it a very great improve
ment in stationary firing.
