RANDOLPH. January 24. SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 1807. ..w. etc •zjcmeismesaasxsi Extract of a letter from Cowles Mode, Secretary and acting Govern ,?• of the Misrisiffii Terri'cry , to the I)c/un t ment oft Va r, dated , “ Washington, M. T. Jan. 19, 1807.” SIR, “ obedience to vour instructions by express of the 20th of December last, I immediately, after proroguing the legislature, proceeded to put the territory in a state of preparation for the arrestation of the suspicious persons and boats, which were contemplated therein ; my. militia were collecting a t particular points on the river, when I received a letter from col. Burr, who had landed at Bayou Pierre, with nin" I boats and about 100 men. Thisjetter j W. nt t<. an avowal of his innocence of tiie charges, which rumor and public i apprehension had announced 'against him, and solicited me to appease the fears which his approach had begotten; a t the same tim he guarded me against the horrors of civil war, and the evils resulting from such a state of things 2 this seeming threat induced me to a dopt a different mode of conduct, from wnat the colonel might have expected; and instead of adopting this, pacific ad monition, I ordered a very huge nor tion of the militia of the territory to rendezvous at certain points, and wait further orders. With the promptitude ot Spartans, our fellow-citizens shoul dered their firelocks, and in 24 hours, 1 had tlie honor to review 575 men ut Natchez, prepared to defend their coun try. I her were ordered under the command of Col. Claiborne, to a point on the river about 21 miles above the city, there to remain to guard the river, and intercept for ail boats that might descend the river. On the K>U) luiispati.bed two of my aids to col. Burr, who had temWEj* jtmixcu* tiie citif authoifiy; these gentlemen engaged on mv part to give the colonel an interview in the neighborhood of the detachment stationed at the mouth of t ole’s creek. Conformably thereto I met the colonel on the 17th, and after a lengthy interview he offered to sur render himself to the civil authority of tiie territory, and to suffer his boats to be search, J. On the 18th, col. Burr, accompanied l>y my aids, major Shields and Poindexter, rode down to the place, and WdS committed to the- highest tri bunal of the civil : uthority, wltere he now remains for trial. “ Four gentlemen of Unquestionable respect.>i:i;ity, with a detachment of 30 men, are now in the act of making the search of the bouts, and to-morrow I expect, their report. ; * - bus sir, tnis mighty alarm, with j all us exaggeration, lias eventuated in ; nine boats and 1.00 men, and the rm jor j part of these arc boys, or young men just from school. Many of their depo sitions have been taken before jut'go Rodney, but they bespeak igno’ain c of the views or designs of the colon. ■' I believe them really ignorant and ed. I believe that they are the - s of stratrgem, if the assevenn ; f generals Eaton and Wilkinson, are to be accredited.” Phi Til /C y Jj il li t c‘l 1 ,, FIA\ L taken a lease for three y ears of Waynes Wharf ant!
