POETICAL SELECTIONS.
MY MOTHER.
Ah ! who is she, whose pensive face,
The soft maternal smile adorning,
And mild blue eye, still bids me trace
The promise bright of life’s gay morning?
\Vhen once a gem of beauty rare,
She shone, unrival'd by another—
Meek, modest, wise, as she was fair,
In youth’* sweet morn—such was ky
MOTHER.
The duteous daughter, faithful friend—
The tender wife—soft, mild, forbearing—
Still did her polish’d presence lend
A charm to life—Ah ! how endearing.
Still shrinking ftorti the public view,
In all the pride of youthful beauty,
No childish thirst for fame she knew,
Hut strew'd with flowers the part of duty.
And oft, when fate’s unerring dart,
Death to a mothers hopes has given—
Still did she teach her breaking heart,
Submission to the will of Heaven.
O thou great power, whom well I know,
Os every earthly good the denor—
Still shield 1 ter future life from woe,
Ar.d shed the choicest blessing on her.
O ! grant a daughter’s fervent prayer,
One only boon u I ask no other :
1 hat still thro’ life, each circling yeai'i
With every joy may bless my mother !
And when these fragile mortal ties,
The awful world of fate shall sever,
O ! may her children spotless rise,
To dwell with her in bliss forever.

At the court of king Francis the first, we are
told,
lo crack jokes on a lord, his buffoon had made
made bold,
ho swore by his wife (let us hope by a good
one)
He d cut off the head of king Francis’ Jack
Podding.
I he bulloon told his king what his lordship
had said,
As he firmly believ’d he would cut off his
head ;
“ Aye, aye,” said the king, between anger
and laughter,
“II he floes, Jack, I’ll hang him up.five min
utes after.”
" You’d oblige me, great sire,” said the jester,
“ much more,
" If yon’d hang up his lordship fire minutes
before !"

ANECDOTE OF DEAN SWIFT.
Swift, in his lunacy, had some in
tervals of sense, ajt which time his phy
sicians tyolc him out for the air. When
they, came tp the park, Swift remark
ed a^new*building, and asked what it
designed for, to which doctor
Kingsfifry answered, that, Mr. Dean,
is 1 the arms and powder
security of the city Oh !
said the Dean, pulling out his pocket
book, let me take an item of that ; this
is worth remarking; my tablets , as
Hamlet says my tablets ; memory, put
down that; on which he wrote the fol
lo\yi£g linWfcwhich were the last he ev
er'Wrfte.
‘ Behold a proof of Irish sense
Here Irish wit is seen
When nothing’s left that’s worth defence,
We build st magazine.’
and then put up his pocket-book, laugh
ing heartily at the conceit, and finishing
it with these words : “ After the steed
is stolen, shut the stable door.” After
which he never said a'sensible word,
so that these lines, may.b'e said to he the
last speech and dying words of this wit.
ANECDOTE OF DOCTOR ROCK.
He was one day .standing at his door
on Ludgate-HiH, when a regular brett
physician passed, who had learning asad,
abilities, but not the success-ift his prac
tice which he deserved.—“ How comes
it,’ (says he to the quack) “ that you,
without education, skill, or the
knowledge of the science, are enabled
to live in the style you do ? yoh
your town-house, your carriage, and
“your country-house ; whilst I, allowed
to possess some knowldge, have pejith*’
er, andean scarcely pick up a surfs'-’
tance.” “ Why, loook you," said Rock,'"
smiling, “ How many people <lo you
think have passed us, since you* asked
me the question ?” “ Why,'’,answered
the doctor, ** perhaps, a hundred."
u And how many out of tins hundred
think you possess common sense ,
“ Possibly, one.” answered the doctor,
“ Then,” said Rock. “ that one comes
to you, and I take care to get the other
ninety-nine.
Two persons, distinguished by their
exertsents upon their backs, having
accidentally come together in a public
company, one of them turning round
and rubbing his back againt the other’s,
exclaimed, with great humor, ‘ Who
the devil will dare to say, in future, that
mountains never met ?’
