POETICAL SELECTIONS.
SUJY-SET.
SOFT o’er the mountain’s purple brow
Meek twilight draws her shadows grey;
From tufted woods, and valleys low,
Light’s magic colors steal away.
Yet still, amid the spreading gloom,
Resplendent glow the western waves,
That roll o’er Neptune’s coral caves,
A zone of light on evening’s dome.
On this lone summit let me rest,
And view the forms to fancy dear,
’Till on the ocean’s darkened breast
The stars of evening tremble clear;
Or the moon’s pale orb appear,
Throwing her line of radiance wide,
Far o’er the lightly curling tide,
That seems the yellow sands to chide.
No sounds o’er silence now prevail,
Save of the dying vale below,
Or sailor’s sopg borne on the gale,
Or oar at'distance striking slow.
So sweet, so.tranquil may my evening ray,
Set to this world, and rise in future day.
THEATRICAL FRACAS.
“ I was quartered,” said an Irish
captain, “ in a country town, and I hap
pened to go to “ Venice Preserved,”
with a friend, who was a little hard of
hearing, and, of course I was obliged
to speak to him pretty loud. Just as I
was observing to him that the tallest
of the senators of Venice was a trum
peter in bur regiment, a shopkeeper
cried—“ Silence!” Upon my word,
friend,” said I “ you give the word of
command a little too imperiously. , ’
“ You must not disturb the company,”
answered he—“ I am afraid,” said I,
“ that we both disturb the company;
and so if you please to walk out with
me, we will settle our business quietly
ourselves, without disturbing.any bo
dy.” The shopkeeper declined this,
and muttered the word Impertinent. I
Was reduced.to the necessity ol pulling
ofi‘ bis wig, and throwing it in his face.
The shopkeeper called on me the next
morning.; and as this was acting like
a gentleman, I thought it would be un
generous to refuse putting myself on a
looting with him—we met according
ly-—The shopkeeper fired liis pistol
very prettily for a tradesman, for the
bullet pierced the corner of my hat:
and as I was convinced that on the
whole, T had been rather in the wrong,
I did not chose to kill the poor fellow,
and so I fired my pistol in the air.
“ Now friend,” said I, “ you have dam
aged my hat full as much as I did your
wig; so, if you are satisfied, our dis
pute may end here; if you are not,
you may take another shot.” He de
clined the last, and agreed to the first
proposal.

i iiE season of the
Imported Horse WHIP, will continue
until the twentieth of September next,
under the terms heretofore published.
WH IP’S owners flatter themselves that
the extensive credit which is given to
those, who may be their encouragers
will be an inducement to a liberal pat
ronage. Good accommodation for
mares.
WHIP’S performances in England
were unquestionably equal to any hor
ses sent abroad, which the racing cal
enders with him will sufficiently testify,
and the event of the late racing in Vir
ginia proves his Colts to be as promis
ing as any in that state; several on
the different turfs this last spring, have
run with exceeding credit, and have
won on the New-market as great a
sweepstake as any heretofore contend
ed for, which by reference to the Vir
ginia Argus will more fully appear.
