. Proposals
BY JAMES EWELL,
PHYSICIAN IN SAVANNAH,
For printing by subscription , a new and
greatly improved Family Physician ,
entitled,
THE PLANTER'S AND MARINERS
Medical Companion.
mm**.
ON this important subject many
books have been written, which, though
excellent in other respects, have yet
greatly failed of their usefulness to Ame
ricans, because they treat of diseases
whjch, existing in very different clim
ates and constitutions, must widely dif
fer from ours. The book now offered
to the public has, therefore, the great
advantage of having been written by a
native American of long and successful
practice in these Southern States, and
who, for years past, has turned much
of his »** - ■ r - *— HHC.Xo~.-5,
subiefc 1 ’ ls Ver y san gum® tnat his
book will prove exceedingly useful to
all families, but more especially to those
livinginscattered neighborhoods,where
regular medical attendance cannot easi
ly be obtained. For the use of fami
lies thus unfortunately circumstanced,
the author has prepared his Planter’s
and Mariner’s Medical Conipamon,
which treats in the most clear and con
cise manner, almost every disease to
which the human body is liable, with
its name, symptoms, causes, regimen,
cure, and means of prevention To
which are subjoined, a treatise on the
diseases peculiar to women and chil
dren ; and a dissertation on such cases
as generally occur in surgery; with a
Dispensatory shewing how to prepare
the most useful family medicines, with
their proper doses; and a Dictionary,
explaining the technical terms used in
this work. With such a guide as this,
a country gentleman may be enabled to
meet a disease in the first moment of
its attack, and thus, where a physician
cannot readily be had, may be made the
happy instrument of preserving lives as
valuable as dear.
CONDITIONS.
The Planter’s and Mariner’s Medical Compa
nion, containing between three and four
hundred pages octavo, handsomely printed
on a fine wove paper, bound and lettered,
shall be delivered to subscribers at three dol
lars and fifty cents ; and printed on an in
ferior paper, in boatds, at two dollars and
fifty cents. Nothing paid until delivery of
the books.
The subscriber informs his numerous friends
in this and the adjoining state, that he shall
set out immediately for Philadelphia to get
printed in a superior style, “ The PLANTERS
and MARINER’S MEDICAL COMPAN
ION,” which they were pleased to honor
with such uncommon patronage. He expects
to be back the first of November next, to dis
tribute the books. Gentlemen who hold Sub
scription Papers are solicited to continue their
friendly exertions to multiply copies of a work
which, ’tis hoped, will prove of great public
utility.
Printers throughout the state will please in
sert this three times in their papers, for which
they shall be paid on my return.

Yesterday at 3 o’clock in the after

majesty the emperor and king, his se

lor of the empire Repaired to the senate.
His serene highness was received
with the usual ceremony, ahd having
taken his seat—said,
Gentlemeny
I bring you a message from his ma
jesty the emperor and king, and letters
patent, give the 28th May last, in the
imperial camp at Finkenstein.
These letters confer the title of here
ditary DukeofDantzickon the marshal
Lefebvre, pretor of the senate.
The message further enhances the
high distinction by the noble and effect
ing exposition of tire motives that have
determined it.
The military career of the tnarshal

and by the brilliant success which has
terminated it.
His majesty could not recompenct
in a more worthy Planner, ancient ahd
numerous services, at the same tithe
that it prepares just subjects of emula
tion to those Who will one day succeed
to the dignity which the marshal Lefeb

MESSAGE
Os his majesty the Emfierour and King,
Senators,
By ouv decrees of 30th March, in the
year 1806, We haVe instituted Dutchies
to recompence the gfeat Services, both
civil and military, which may be rettdeN
ed Us, to give fresh stays to oUr throne,
and to encircle our crown with new lus
tre.
It belongs to us, the care of securing
the state and th; fortune of the families
Which devote themselves ehtlrely to our
service, ahd who constantly aacrlflte
their interests to ours. The perma
nent honours, the legitimate, honoura
ble, and glorious fortune that we wish
to give those who have rendered Us em*
inent services, whether in the tivil or
military career, will contrast with tht
illegal) hidden , shameful fortune , of thoSe,
who, in the exercise of their functions,
only seek their interest intend of keep-a
ing in view that ol our people and the
good of our service. Without doubt)
the conscientiousnessofhavingdone otlr
duty, and the benefits attached to oUt
esteem suffice to keep a good French
man in the path of honour, but the
order of society is so constituted, that
to apparent distinction to a large for
tune are attached a consideration & a lus
tre with which we desire those of our
subjects to be surrounded who are great
by their talents, their services and their
character: the first gift of man.
He who has the most seconded us
in the first stage ofour reign and who
after having rendered services in every
circumstance of his military career,
has just united his name to the memo
rable siege in which he has displayed
talents and a brilliant courage, has ap
peared to us to merit an illustrious di*.
tinction, we are desirous also of conse
crating an epoch so honourable to our
arms, and by letters, patent, which we
hav charged our cousin, the arch-chah
cellor,to communicate to you, we have
created our cousin the marshal and sen
atus Lefebvre Duke of Danzick. May
this title borne by his descendants re
trace to them the virtues of their fath
er, and may they acknowledge them
selves unworthy of it, if ever they pre
fer the cowardly repose and idleness of
the great city to the perils ahd hoble
dust of camps, if ever their first senti
ments cease to be for the country and
for us, may none of them terminate his
career without having shed his blood for
the glory and honour of our superb
France; may they in the name they
bear, never ace a privilege) but duties
towards our people and us ; oil these
conditions, our protection and that ol
our successors will distinguish tfiem at
all times.
Senators —We feel a sentiment of
satisfaction in thinking that the first
