New Postal Rates.— The most
important changes in the code is
that respecting miscellaneous mat
ter —transient newspapers, maga
zines, pamphlets, etc. On this
class the postage is just half what
is under the old law—that is such
matters can be sent, ,in parcels not
weighing over twelve ounces, at
one cent for each two ounces. A
one-cent stamp will therefore carry
a magazine or a package of news
papers which does not weigh more
than two ounces. 'Book postage
under the new code is two cents lot
each two ounces or fraction thereof,
but this only between publisher and
author, and manuscript for publica
tion in newspapers and magazines
must be paid for at letter rates,
which remain as heretofore. Noth
ing weighing more than four pounds,
except Congressional documents,

We have seen two or three con
flicting statements as to the loss of
Messrs. A. M. George & Son, by
the destruction of their ,6tore at
Stonewall Mills near Milford, Baker
County. A few days ago we had
the pleasure of a visit from Mr. A.
T. George in our office, and from
,hirh learned the particulars of the
event, which has entailed such heavy
loss upon them. From some facts
they feel'assured that the store
house was first, robbed arid then
fifed in order to cover a, less by a
still greater crime.
The entire remaining stock, con
sisting of groceries and .dry goods
was. all destroyed. Moderately
valued at S9OOO. No insurance.-*-
This took place Monday night,
Nov. 18. '
We,are certain that their, many
friends sympathize with them iii
■this great loss of property.
The incendiary is known and effi
cient parties are upon his track. —
We hope before going to press to
have heard of his arrest and confine
ment. His punishment should be
heavy.
A gentleman (?) of Calhoun coun
ty informed Mr. A. T. George that
be had seen and held familiar con
versation with a negro who.pad iu
his possession articles which he i-e
--cognized its having seen in Mr. G’s.
store. He offered to secure the
negro upon rececipt of SIOO. This
is a specimen of noble, generosity of
a kind which we hope Calhoun can
not produce many parallels. We tin
not know which Shines the brightest
the pick-penny spirit in fishing for
a bribe, from one whose loss llud
already been so heavy, or his will -
ingness to betray his negro friend.
We find that we.have unwittingly
drawn upon, our town the pious
commisseratiou of
nal, the Macon,Telegraph & Mes
senger. Saitli they, “Is there a
lodge of G. Ts. in Cutiibert?’),
Saith we, come and see. We are j

also a lodge.of juvenile ducks who

ciate editor of this paper too much
resembles the Editors of the Tele

terior of “ necessary evils ” is more
familiar to him than that of a G.
T’s. lodge. \Y T e do not, however,

The Cattle Cuke. —A certain
farmer, sf noisy temperance man,
by tlie' way, who is justly proud of
his fine imported stock, recently
fancied that one of his best milkers j
was stricken with cattle disease, |
and sent, in a great fright for the }
village farrier, a ne’er rlo-well sort !
of-a fellow, whom lieliad often lec :
tured for his tippling propensrties. }
Dick came, examined the*animal; !
looked grave,. and asked, , “ Have
you any whiskey or brandy handy?”
“No,” said the'farmer. “Pat, run
to the druggist as soon as possible,
and tell him I want a quart ol
brandy for medical purposes.
When the liquor arrived, Dick fobk
the'bottle, uncorked it, smelt of it,
and, faking a good drink, purt, the
bottle in his pocket, saying, “Your
cow-will be all Tight presently ; t |
have pulsed a thorn'out of her foot,”
ttnd walked off.
The local of the. Baltimore, Sun
says the horse raffish trade in the
city markets lias fallen 'off’ materi
ally of late, owing to a rumor, that
the radish zoo jr had broken out in
several q! the market stalls.
L of ourDocto.rs tells' a horse
I story, which may, or may not, be
‘true. A countryman rapped, at the
Doctor’s door, aod on being admit
ted, inquired if it was true the epi
zootic was in town. He was told
it was.. “ Well,” said he, opening
a well filled bag, “ here’s Some
horse radishes I want vaccinated.”.
“ Halloa, dur I” shouts a darkey
to the driver of a.horse foaming at
the mouth, “ has your Loss got de
epibrutic ?” “Yes, sab,” replied
the' other, “ but I tink I've cotch up
with; it, for I give him a dose of as

A Wrong. —The fact that all
counties cTeated in Georgia, since
the adoption of the Radical. Con.
stitution, are, by. trie provisions of
that instrument, prevented fiotn be
ing represented in the Legislature,
even temporally, is to b.e regretted.
The provision in the Constitution
is an unuSual one. -At the late elec
tion Representatives were chosen
by the people of each of these
counties, and it is understood that
all the gentlemen elected will urge,
the claim of tlieir , constituents at
once. Such, at least, is the pur
pose of Hon. Jas. Buchan, of the
naty county of Dodge. As justice
requires that .representation should
precede taxation, it is gr.ently to. be
desired that some step's should be
taken by the Legislature, at the ear 7
best moment, to remedy the palpa
ble defect in the fundamental • law.
We believe there are five new coun
ties in -tlie State, and trust there, will
be no difficulty encountered in secu
ring them an early Representation.
