To the People of Georgia and
the South'
Office, of the
Confederate Monumental Association
• of Georgia, ,
Augusta, Ga., Pune, 1872^
WE deem it proper to appeal directly to
our feUow-citizens for their substan
tia! aid in honoring our fallen Confederates,
and henafittmg those » ho were dependent up
on them Tor maintenance and.pictection. No
one, we feel assured, yull deem it intrusive in
ns to do' so. The cause commends itself to the
patriotic "sentintent of all our citizens. It
brings freshly to otir minds the -ad but chival
ric story of our noble.sons lighting for man’s
most sacred rights—country, honor, liberty
’and home.
We cannot, as far as we can ee \ sirt-d the
light of onr work 'upon the impenetrable
gloom of the grave. Tin- spirits of ourL>ri
Confederates may see us or not; lint otir iu
stiuc'ts make ns-weep and grieve when death
steals silently into our liouseholds and takes
our loved ones away. 'We honor them in t heir
graves, and inscribe their-virtues u'pou Mon
uments. Out spirits and senses become im
bued with the-solemnities of death and our
irreparable loss.
Thus we fed when they fade and die, of or
dinary causes. Shall we feel the. less when
taking no heed of danger, courting it indeed
in full health ann manhood-—they meet the en
emies of tlleir country and die iu the effort to
save their people fiom she oppressor’s wrung
tWe still rise witli the san, pursue otir call
gk, enjoy life, and are blessed by a- merciful
Providence. They ar« iu the gloom of tlie r
graves, having done for ns ail they could iu
this lower world. Are they not entitled to
Our pity, our love, and all the care we cau
take of their fame ? Wjfl it not be something
to exhibit this to the World? Will we not
respect and honor ourselves in doing it ? Is it
not nccsrStiry to present of re
.spect and gratitude’to the £yes and thoughts
ot the young? Wiipt will the world say il
we .shall fail t,6 do it. ?■
Some will.not contribute—their motives
are th> ir own; all cannot, but our prosper
ous Merchants, Lawyers, Physicians, Plan
ters,- and thousands of ofheie who are well-to
do in worldly affairs, wiil feel bettor W'hen
they ihall all aided itr this Work ot
love and gratitude. All the followers of the
Arabian Prophet cannot visit his tomb, but
the green turbaned Pilgrims who can, are
held in higher esteem when they return from
Mecca. And will not those be honored who
shall aid in this tribute to those who fell in
our service and bur cause ? Who is there
that would u.it be pleas*,d ,t*> have bis name
.inscribed upbu tl.e list that will be on perpet
ual itcord in the archives of the Confederate
Monumental Association ? Will it not. be
emphatically a Roll of Honor ?
All of us will soon sleep without a dream.
Who can hear the thought that no one will
care foj or respect ins memory when -be is
gone ? •
The fame of the gallant Confederate dt%d is
in.the care and keeping of all our people.—
What would be thought of him who would
say : Let them sleep untared for, ‘unhon
ored and unsung S'ate, Southern and
personal pride would abhor the-sentiment.
As mortals, our, brave Confederates have.
peri«h*-d ; as.our defenders, honor, gratitude
and duty call upon lis to protect, the.v fame
and cherish their memories forever.
