Following the lead of Houston
county, we are glatl to sec Irom
tile Amcricus Recorder that tlie
Agricultural Society of Sumter
county at its last meeting took up
the question of immigration, and
made the first step towards or
ganizing an Immigration Bureau
for the purpose of collecting, pub
lishing and circulating informa
tion regarding that county, with
a view to inducing immigration
The step is certainly well taken,
ami we hope our enterprising
neighbors may continue to push
forward the work, and finally be
satisfied with its results. One
has but to read the large dailies
to satisfy himself that there is a
very large number ot excellent,
well to do farmers in the North
ern and Western States who are
anxiously looking about for some
escape from the rigorous climate
of their present home, and want
to know where they may go, and
secure the advantages they desire.
It is a fact that we have the cli
mate, the health, the advantages
they seek, and we believe in a
larger degree than can be found
in many other places. We have a
vast amount of surplus land,
which is not cultivated at all, and
still more that is butchered upby
a negro tenantry.
That the immigration of a con
siderable number of these hardy,
thrifty, energetic well-to-do peo
ple would lie oi great advantage
st .nces like the foregoing to show ! raatter ® than pure disinterested
patriotism. Barrios is man of
wealth, iron will, a fine manager,
has made a good governor of
Gautemaula, and we think is
likely to succeed in uniting them
all into one, as the native good
sense of many of their jteople will
see the advantages to accrue from
such a union.
