The eclipse on Monday does not
seem to have affected the weather, as
the bright, balmy days still come to
tempt as with their beauty. How we
long to lay aside oar books and ram
ble in tile woods, dabble in the streams
and draw in long breaths of the fresh,
pare spring sir, while basking in tiie
bright sunshine. We do not think
we would need the assistanreof “blue
glass” to increase our intellectual or
f thysical strength. The spring iove-
iness, warmth and brightness would
do ail that coaid lie done for ns. Bat
no such joy is in store for us right now,
unless we take advantage cf Saturday,
ior examinations loom tip before ns,
for next week, in all their atteactive-
ness. We may study never so hard,
but lor all that, we never welcome ex
aminations with the bright sntile that
we give the thought of picnics snd
Christmas gaveties. We do our best
to get ready for them, and put our
whole souls into it, but draw a long
breath of relief when the task is end
ed. These written examinations are
serious things, for a girl has to do her
own work or tell a falsehood. Site is
required to sign a pledge that site has
received no assistance, ami it would
take a very bad girl to sign a false
pledge We can’t believe tint any
such girl treads dear old Andrew’s
honored balls. Written examinations
are certainly the fairest and best test
of what a pupil is doing. It cer
tainly acts ;.s a great stimulus to most
of us.
Tlte pupils of Andrew are tinder
many ouligatbms to the local papers
and Atlanta Constitution for the very
complimentary notices of tlte concert
given here recently. They hope to
give much more attractive iterforman-
yes in everything during the approach
ing commencement. Ah! how that
word thrills us! just three short
months and then home, rest and fun!
Surely there are many broad dashes
of sunlight in the picture of the school
girl’s life. Let us get ail ot the bene
fit and all of the joys to be had out of
it, and go inte tlte real, earnest life of
after years with the same intentions.
Life is mostly what we make it. We
see this exemplified every day in our
school life. How differently some of
our fellow students look at life, front
others, and how differently they iin-1
press people. Some are a joy and '
help to every one, and scatter kind
woids and deeds as they go. Others
—well, they don’t do this, ami, con
sequently make themselves and others
unhappy. It ia so much easier to be
happy than otherwise. It takes an
effort to be miserable. Let us all try
to be bright, joyous ami carefree, for
liod intended it thus—t is the natural
state of the young—and it is wrong to
strive against Providence.
We hear it whispered that tlte pu-

The senior editor of this paper
is convinced by the testimony of
others, and especially by s recent
experiment of his own, that rolling
land, or dragging it with a heavy
brush after the oats have been
plowed in is a great protection
against cold. Over three fourths
of the acreage put in oats on his
farm a heavy brush was dragged.
Part of this land was stiff clay
land, anil part was light and san
dy. Wherever the brush was
dragged the oats have come up
much better, and have not been

temporary check from that cause.
