Absolutely Pure.
BY MISS E. C. stGGS.
From the expression resting up
on his face, the handsome young
physician was evidently in trou
ble. His dark eyes were cast
down, and he had stood in a deep
ly meditative altitude, for a long
while outside of his office door,
leaning against a tree, which
threw its friendly shade across
the side walk.
Doctor Marshall had come from
his home among the red hills of
Georgia, three ijionlh3 previous to
his introduction to the reader, to
begin his fortune in this little
Alabama village of Chesnev. A ! and yet it was worth a trial; yes,

Very soon the three miles were
passed, and doctor Marshall drew
rein before the gate of the Taylor
mansion; gave his horse to the
care of a boy in waiting, and en
lered the house. John Taylor
met him. and conducted him to
liis mother's room. Two elderly
ladies and a beautiful young gill
were present, to whom
the physician was presented, and
then he turned to the sick lady
upon the bed. As his eye fell up
on her, his heait sank with the
dreadful apprehension that he
was even js* tnu late. Every ap
pcarance of the lady's face lhiTi
leaned over and tenderly begged
that nothing more lie given her as
death was inevitable, he desired
that she be disturbed as little as
possible.
The physician did not answer;
did not lake his eyes from the
ly. and yet with what an air of J
indifference, the doctor paid his
hoard in the village that evening;
nr how great was the surprise ot
his acquaintances at the unex
pec ted result of that noon visit.
We may state however, that old
sick woman's face. A strange! doctor Brown returning at sunset
silence filled the room, as each j from Lite Gulf City, sought him
one of the several relatives gatli- ‘ out after lea, and with a hearty

the doctor waited, but still she

Through the silence came a imir

Marriages Between Cousins.
The inquiry as to the effects of
such marriages on their offspring
comes from a friend in Oregon^
“Is not Iho common belief that
marriages between first cousins
arc objectionable somewhat like'
the belief in the effect of the moon'
upon the planting of crops,
shrinking of meats, etc., merely
coincidence and nol caused *>y
the moon? I am aware, of course,
that family traits must be more
pronounced in the children, bat
where both sides arc menially and
physically sound I can’t see why
such marriages should have the'
tendency lo produce unsound 1
children.”
Though the prejudice against
snch marriages has a sounder
basis than mere superstition,
their evil effects upon offspring’
seems to have been exaggerated,-
except in instances where there is
a family predisposition to serious
disease. In 1871, when the En
glish census was to be taken, Sir
John Lubbock, Dr. Playfair and
other scientific men made an effort
to have statistics obtained as to'
the prevalence and consequences
of cousin marriages, but unforlu
nately they* were defeated by a
Parliament which was silly
enough to treat their proposition 1
with scornful laughter. After
wards Mr. George H. Darwin, a*
son of the great Dawin, and him
self a man of much scientific rep*-
ulation, undertook an investiga-'
lion on iiis own account, though 1
in a comparatively narrow field,-
and reached Ike conclusion that,
on the average, such marriages-
did not protlnce the evil effects'
commonly attributed to them.
But Signor Paolo Mantegazza,-
tlie most popular young men in a professor at Pavia, made a some-

His office paid him #15,000 a year,
