Last week, while the Interstate
Farmers convention was in ses
sion in Atlanta. Mr. II. W. Gra
dy, of the Constitution, delivered
an address before that body which,
as usual, was a masterpiece of
eloquence and oratory. Aiming
other things the speaker thus al
luded to the cotton plant:
‘•What a royal plant it is! The
world wails in attendance on its
growth. The shower that falls
whispering on its leaves is heard
around the earth. The sun that
shines on it is tempered by the
prayers of all the people. The
trust that chills it and the dew
that descends from the stars is
noted, and the trespass of the
little worm on its green leaf is
more to England than the advance
of the Russian army on her Asian
outposts. It is gold from the in
slant it puts forth its tiuy shoot.
Its fibre is current in every bank,
and when loosing its fleeces to the
sun it floats its snowy banner that
glorifies the field of the humble
farmer, that man is marshalled
under a flag that shall compel the
allegiance of the world and wring
subsidy from every nation on
earth.”

The Valdosta Times lias found

Dr. Tucker, the able editor of

is opposed to making it a felony,
believing that llte law is strong

such a charge. Until then we

In Whitfield county, not Ion;

over the respite of a negro, Henry
Pope, accused of ra|te, and sen

in a wild and reckless manner,

The lawyer defending Pope was
afraid to move for a new trial,
notwithstanding he could prove
by perfectly upright witnesses to
tile number of eight, of the best
while citizens of an Alabama
county, 100 miles away, that Pope
was in that county on the day of
the unfortunate occurrence for
which be was sentenced to die.
He was taken to Atlanta and
jailed for safe keeping. But for
this there is no doubt the enraged
(icople of the county would have
taken him from the county jail
and swuDg him to the first tree.
Everything was against Pope. He
answered the description perfectly
well. The unfortunate girl said
lie was the wretch when brought
up before her, tlicjury found him
guilty, and every circumstance
fixed tlie crime upon Pope, with
