A Great Battle.
A correspondent writing from
Ivisscmee. Fla., says: A very ex
citing and sanguinary contest be*
tween a huge hull, alligator and
several head of cattle occurred
a few miles bflow here, on the
bank of Lake Tohnpakalign, in
which the alligator was killed and
two bulls so badly injured that
they had to he shot, ami another
was rendered almost hors de com
bit. A parly of hunters, several
of them visitors from the Tropi
cal hotel here, were eamping out
on the lower shell mound, eight
miles southeast of here, which
overlooks the lake, though several
hundred rod. from the shore,
which is marshy and grassy.
Cattle gather near there by the
hundreds, as the grass is always
fresh, and black flies, their b^ne
on most like-.ides, generally ab
sent. While eating their dinner
that day the It timers were startled
by loud bellowing* that eame
changed to those of pain and fear.
His antagonist charged at him
time and lime again, lacerating
him terribly. Finally, no resist
ance was made, the victor tramp
lingon the bloody carcass, though
the terrible grip of those iron
jaws still maintained their hold
on the nose of the first bull, who
had been lorced to his knees, and
wa^fast dying Trotn the terrible
hiows lie had received, and the
loss of blood. Several of the
watchers then went down, and
mercifully shot the two wounded
bulls.
The alligator, which measured. |
ns near as they could ascertain.
