Dorman B. Eaton, in the North
American Review, givea this high
estimate of Grover Cleveland's
character and career:
The career of President Cleve
land is unique in our history.
Save for a single day he had her
«r been in Washington until he
went thereto assume the duties
of his great office. Just past 47
years of age, he was the youngest
•>f all our Presidents except Presi
dent Grant. No candidate had
been so little known to the people,
known so little of the official life
of his country, or was acquainted
wiih so lew of the great men of
his party. He had never met a
member of his cabinet except
those from his own Slate. He
IihiI never been in New England,
nor further south than Wash
ington, nor further west than
Ohio, He had been neither a
popular orator, an editor nor a
public writer on any question,
lb-had had no part in military
iitfuirs nor in any popular move
im-nt. He had not been a party
leader or the head of a taction,
nor had he rendered any party
services which in the view of
politicians, is a claim for office.
He had no personal followers. No
candidate ever so dependent upon
his own personality, ever so utterly
destitute of adventitious aid, ever
made Pfesldeftt for reasons so
original and peculiar. Never a
partisan, he was a sturdy Demo
crat always. His official experi
ence when made President had
been lar less Ilian that of any one
of liis predecessors. Until No
veunber, 1881, when he w as elect
ed ina^or of Buffalo—but thirty-
six months before his election as
President, Mr. Cleveland had held
no other offices than those of as
sistant attorney for a few months,
and sheriff for three years. Be
yond his own section of his State
even his name wras unknown. He
had served as mayor less than
eleven months when he was nomi
nated for governor of New York,
and as governor less than twenty
months when he was nominated
for the Presidency. Nothing in
our history is so extraordinary,
or upon the theory of the politi
ciahs, so inexplicable as this. No
national crisis, no military glory,
no chance of fortune raised him,
aa some ot his predecessors, to
the highest place. * * No
Presidential candidate in this
generation made less effort than
Grover Cleveland to elect himself
or had so little aid from office
holders’ political assessment.
This man, new in national af
fairs,-has become not only the
greatest moral and political force
of his party, but the statesman
most respected and trusted by
those whose judgments are least
biased by puity prejudice. He
has become the leader of his par
ly. so far as it has any as a whole,
not by going down the way of its
passions, but by calling it up to
the plane of its duly. In a eabi
net as able perhaps as any in this
generation, he is conspicuously
foremost. If wc except Jackson
and Lincoln no President since
Jefferson has been solgreat a po
litical force. His acts and State
papers would be a belter platform
for bis party than any its leaders
could frame. He has elevated the
leadership of his party and made
a new career possible fur it. His
death would be the severest loss
it could suffer ami more than that
of any other three men In the
country would change all the
problems of lh*e next election.

A Fight with a Catamount.
Editor Home find farm:
One night we heard a terrible
uproar among the sheep, and fath
er and brother George, armed with
an edd thne flint-lock rifle, and an
old linrse pistol, and a raftlefn,
matched forth to see what the
trouble was. They were just in
time to see a tremendous cata
mount making off with one ol the
finest lamb? in the flock—my pel
as it happened. Next ^ay they
trailed it to a thicket, where, after
eating as much as lie wanted, he
had huiicd iLin the leaves. Futh
or made a box trap and placed it
over the spot where the lamb W as
buried. It was several days be
fore be returned, and fell an easy
prey. We all went down to see
him. He was a fine looking ani
mal, about two feet high, foui-
feet long, and very strongly built.
He bad large eyes, small oafs,
“bnrnside” Whiskers, and at a ills
lance reminded one of C. A. Ar
thur.
A catamount lives on stray pigs,
invalid rabbits and such other
hric a brae us he happens to come
across in summer, and fatten. In
winter he lives on hope, and, un
like the ground hog, loses flesh.
Well, after holding a council of
war, it was decided to invite all
the neighbors and have a steeple
chase. There were twenty seven
dogs in all, including two gray-
hounds. The dogs were arrang
ed in a half-moon around the trap,
and the door opened. The “cat"
didn’t seem in much haste. He
walked leisurely out, smiled at us,
looked up at the sky to see if it
was going to rain, then trotted
leisurely across the field as if to
say lie haled to part with good
eoiupany, hut had business sev
enteen miles away, and was going
to see almt!t It. When he was
about a hundred yards away wc
loosed the dogs, and when lie
heard the concerted yell all his
melancholy seemed to leave him.
and he skipped from county to
county as if he meant to surround
the globe in 9:32. The gray-
hounds pulled up along-sidc of
him ami engaged him in conver
sation until the other dogs came
up and surrowndvd him, then the
“cat" whirled around like a buzz
satf for about thirty seconds, and
the an' for half a mile around was
filled with dog meat and excite
ment. Wc came up just in limt
to take the deposition of the last
dog and watch the “cat” as he
trotted contentedly across the
next county. C M. Giiv.en.

The Survivors of Waterloo.
Manchester Guardian.
Who arc the survivors of Wa
terloo? The carl of Albermarle and
Gen. Whiclico’e figure in the“Ar
my List” as. the only two men
who shared in that famous fight.
The Daily Chronicle mentioned
Lieut. Col. William Hewitt as a
third, but there seems to be some
doubt as to the accuracy of the
information. He sold out of the
army sixty years ago, and if still
alive is in liis 96th year. The
duke of Albermarle, in a genial
letter to the Daily Chronicle, says:
“Mention is made in your imp res
sion of this morning of Lieut. Col.
William Hewitt as one of the sui-
vivors of Waterloo. I hope your
information is correct, for I should
like In greet an old. friend and
comrade. He was the junior cap
lain of Ae regiment in which I
served in the action. The editor
of‘Hart’s Army List’ knows noth
ing further of this officer. Ilian that
lie sold out of the army nearly 60
years ago (Aug. 10. 1S28). Hew
itt was six years older than I, end
I am in my 90ih year.” The earl
of Albermarle was born in 1799,
and has probably been the eye
witness of greater social and po
lilical changes than have ever be
fore happened within the compass
of a single life. The map of Eu
rope has been changed again, and
at home the changes have been
equally momentous. What is im
portant to notice is that the alter
ations in the fabric of English
society have been made in the in
terests ol justice and fairness.—
The institutions of the country
are stronger now than they were
ninety years ago. because the mass
of the people are no longer outside
the pale of the constitution. “Ev
ery man ’would live long.” said
Swift, perhaps cynically, "but no
man would be old.” In our own
day some public men have learn
ed the secret of a long life without
growing old. Among them we
may surely include the venerable
peer who gave his “Waterloo re
eeption” on Monday.
