Racist is the word Bill Russell,
former Boston Celtics superstar
and television sports
commentator, jused to describe
Boston and its sports writers
last week.
Russell, who recently signed
a lucrative five-year contract to
become the new coach and
general manager of the Seattle
Supersonics, said last week that
it was “a very traumatic
experience working in Boston,
and there are some scars left.”
In 1959, the Celtics’ top
draft choice was a black man,
thus, bringing the total of
blacks on the team to four.
According to Russell the local
sports writers mentioned this
fact on the front sports page
and noted “the city of Boston
wasn’t ready for that many
blacks on the team.”
However, Russell said he
expects better things in Seattle
because “this is a city that
accepts a guy for what he is.”

There are, no doubt, those
who believe that an Army band
plays nothing but marches and
patriotic music. In the “old
days” this was true. Army
bands were originally formed
for the purpose of fanning the
fires of patriotism as they
played in parades, rallies and
other military events.
But times change; and
customs change along with it.
This holds true for the Army as
well as the civilian aspects of
today’s way of life.
“People are inclined to have
a post-World War II concept of
an Army band,” said Chief
Warrant Officer Robert Conn,
bandmaster of the 434th U.S.
Army Band at Ft. Gordon.
“In addition to playing
marches and other
military-oriented pieces, we
play many types of music -
whatever the occasion calls for.
The band plays rock, jazz,
polkas, pop and folk music -a
variety designed to appeal to
all musical tastes.”
Conn went on to say that
the Ft. Gordon band has
several openings for young
musicians: “We especially need
woodwinds, trumpets, piano
and drums.”
Anyone interested in joining
the band at Ft. Gordon --
permanent party military
personnel including members
of the Women’s Army Corps,
and civilian high school
graduates, phone 791-2813 to
make an appointment for
audition by the bandmaster.
“We are open for phone calls
every day from 7:30 a.m. to 4
p.m.,” he said.
“All that is required is that
the applicant pass a
preliminary audition, for which
we will furnish the music and
the instrument. Those who
pass will be given eight weeks
of on-the-job-training (OJT)
with the band. They are then
given a second audition to
determine their ability to play
with the band. Incidentally,
I’ve never known of one to fail
once he got on OJT,” Conn
added.

welcome. The advent of Wacs
playing in Army bands came
about earlier this month when
the Army changed its ruling
prohibiting them from joining
Army bands. The only
exception to htis rule is the

Community Action Agency
Salaries Are Generally Low
A survey of Georgia’s
Community Action Agencies
reveals that there’s notheing
high about salaries of their
employees.
“Despite opinion to the
contrary,” Jim Redmond,
President of the Georgia
Community Action
Association, says “salaries of
our employees are generally
low, and at best modest.”
Replies to questionnaires
from 14 --or two-thirds -of
Georgia’s 21 agencies reveal
that the average annual salary
paid executive directors is
$13,499.
Economic Opportunity
Atlanta is not included in this
average, Redmond said. “It is
one of the Nation’s largest
agencies, and is not comparable
to the average community
action agency.”
Redmond said that it is
important to distinguish
between employees of the
Office of Economic
Opportunity, who are federal
employees under civil service,
and community action agency
employees who work for
private non-profit
corporations, and are without
any job security.
The highest salary paid to
executive directors is $15,825,
and the lowest is $11,520.
Only 32 employees out of a
total of 602 make more than

of $ 1 5,000,000,” he
continued.
The most revealing result of
the survey, he said, is that
more than 60 percent of
community aciton employees
make less than $5,000, while
another 25 percent make
between $5,000 and SB,OOO.

BLACK WOMEN
Cont’d from page 7
the group.
She said the black woman’s
job was “making it possible for
our girls, boys, and men to
move into their rightful
position in society--but
especially black men because a
black woman is all a black man
has.”
Unlike many feminists
meetings, there were no
delegates calling men male
chauvinist pigs. Interestingly, a
cocktail party was listed in the
program with the theme,
“Black Men, We Love You
Madly.”
Another gal, Tommia B.
Holland, director of the
Indiana Civil Rights
Commission,said it this way:
“I’m from Richmond, Ind.
where most black men had to
do three to five jobs to take
care of the families. It was
easier for black women to get
jobs. It’s just made me oriented
to pushing to get the black
man philosophically,
psychologically and
economically the head of the
family.”
Another woman, a lawyer
from the District of Columbia,
explained her position this
way. “Whatever negative
elements are thrust upon us, it
is first because we’re black and
second because we’re women.”
Roscoe Dellums, the wife of
U.S. Rep. Ronald Dellums,
D-Calif., charged white
feminists of “trying to define
(our) political posture and
taking an elistist position in
saying to black women, ‘Where
are you? It’s rather
intimidating.”
And Joan Wilson, a friend of
Mrs. Dellums who is white,
said, “I’m very disparaging of
the lack of dialogue” between
the black and white women’s
movements. “As white
feminists, we don’t realize the
fear black women have of
being co-opted.”
Although there wasn’t
complete agreement that race
should taken precedence over
sex, the group of women
seemed pretty convinced that
this was in the best interests of
the black community.
