19 Year-Old Milwaukee
Filmmaker Wins First
Award In 1973 Kodak
Teenage Movie Awards
A 7-minute movie produced
by a 19-year-old Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, filmmaker captured
a first award in the 16mm
category of the eleventh annual
Kodak Teenage Movie Awards.
Claude Douglas Dismuke,
2619 North 20th Street,
received a $ 150 cash award and
a bronze medallion for
“Junkie” at a press conference
at The Plaza Hotel in New
York.
Produced in cooperation
with Cary Edwards, Reggie
Davis and The Milwaukee Inner
City Workshop, this color film
documents the dreadful world
of heroin addiction against a
background of blues and
poetry. Caught up in a
clandestine contemporary
scene, a young man drags
himself out of bed and onto
neon-lit night city streets. At a
bar, he trades an
ornately-framed photograph
that had been hanging in his
room for a pint of liquor. After
drinking the liquor, he robs the
ticket seller at a theatre, and
then in a grimy washroom, he
meets his connection to trade
the “take” for heroin. Back in
his room, the boy “shoots up”

as a velvet voice on the
soundtrack says, “This is
heroin speaking.” “I am a
world of power,” boasts heroin
as the boy slips from reality. “I
can make a school boy forget
his books, a beauty, forget her
100k5.... Take this junkie who I
made my flunkie. He forgot,
I’m heroin.”
“A very effective anti-heroin
film, one of the best I’ve seen,”
enthused one judge who
reflected his colleagues’
consensus in the choice of
“Junkie” for a top award.
“Outstanding piece of work!
Beautifully done from start to
finish and quite moving ...
good combination of realism
and poetry ... good script, well
acted and photographed ...
contains a lot of meaning.”
A June graduate of
Washington High School,
Dismuke says he was inspired
to make his winner through the
real-life tragedies of “people I
know that at one time or
another experienced this
wicked scene.” The future
television technician or
cinematorgrapher spent “about
52 hours on and off’ to
complete his production.

For week of: January 17
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Pay more heed to duties and stop
thinking about yourself so much. You may get an apportunity for
a new job and find it ideal for a short time, but then you wish
you were back on a former job. Try asking for your old job back
and you will get it!
TARUS (April 21 - May 20) Irritations about minor matters
can make you almost ill. Your worry and fussing about work can
lead to conditions resembling an ulcer which might turn out to be
a real ulcer before long.
GEMINI - (May 21 - June 21) You may be far more
lighthearted about a situation than it merits. Best to take
relationships seriously and try to make them as good as possible
rather than having a chip on your shoulder.
CANCER - (June 22 - July 22) Work can be rugged and you
may be weary, but you will find away to pull yourself together
enough to get over the rough spots and keep going with your
duties. You may not get enough rest but the time for that is
.coming, so be of good cheer.
LEO (July 23 - August 23) When choosing clothes be sure that
they go well together, and don’t feel you have to stick to muted
colors in order to achieve this. Go in for the bright and new tones
which can give others quite a kick.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 22) Your nerves can be on
edge and you may take it out on an innocent younger person.
This cycle is especially unfortunate for anyone who has high
ambitions for their children. Children are not likely to be very
considerate of you now.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) You may spot
someone who takes your immediate interest, and decide upon a
love conquest. This person may be near you at work and that
makes an exciting game, Or, this person may drop in where you
work which is even more exciting.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 22) The time is rough going
for you. You are adjusting to totally new circumstances and will
have to summon all the strength in your character. You may meet
with disloyalty, have insolent children to annoy you or friends
who fail you.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Make your
habits healthy and keep them that way. Do not pull any fancy
tricks over this lingering holiday season. Be very careful what goes
into your stomach and don’t take dares or rise to the bait of
those around you.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Avoid being gullible
this week. You could be taken in by someone who has a long
record of falshood and red hot lies. In romance, be especially
careful not to believe everything you see or hear. You could be
taken in by a charming person who knows how to put on an act.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) This month can be a
dismaying cycle due to romantic criss-cross conditions. Your
lover may have someone new. You should not worry too much
about this for it will all be over by the time summer arrives and
you’ll be back in the arms of your beloved.
PISCES (February 20 - March 20) You can be terribly
disappointed in a marriage, be it the first or second. You can
make a resolve to leave and stay away for good. No one can stop
you from such a move, but do think about it more than twice
before taking this step.
