All-American Football Dinner, Function To Be
Part Os Super Bowl Weekend In Houston
Twenty-two of America’s
finest Black college football
players will be honored as
All-American selections at the
Pittsburgh Courier-Royal
Crown Cola awards banquet in
Houston, Friday, January 11,
1974, it was announced today.
This year’s team, chosen by
a poll -of professsional scouts,
coaches and sports writers
covering SO Black colleges,
marks the 49th annual
selection of the mythical
squad.

the awards banquet for the
tenth time, this year Royal
Crown Cola Co. is hosting the
players, their coaches and
presidents of their respective
colleges at the three-day Super
Bowl weekend.
Willie Davis, himself a
former Black All-American
selection (Grambling, 1955)
and an all-time great with the
Green Bay Packers, will be
guest speaker.
The dinner will also honor
the Black college back and
lineman of the year plus

awards to the National
Football League Veteran and
Rookie of 1973. Last year the
pro awards went to Ben McGee
of the Pittsburgh Steelers and
the Giants’ John Mendenhall.
The Bick All-America team
has been a veritable gold mine
of talent for the National
Football League. In addition to
Davis, a partial list of “alumni”
blue chip pro performers
includes Deacon Jones,
Chargers; Curly Culp, Willie
Lanier, Buck Buchanan and
Jim Marsalis of the Chiefs;

KENNETH WALLACE
Kenneth Wallace, nephew of
George J. Thomas, Paine
College sophomore will play in
the 1973 Gator Bowl.
The 22-year-old senior from
Texas Tech will play
left-defensive - cornerback
against the University of
Tennessee on Dec. 29th.
Wallace, an all Southern
Conference defensive player,
was selected to the second
Mendenhall and Rosey Brown,
Giants; Leroy Kelly, Browns;
Emerson Boozer, Jets; Claude
Humphrey, Falcons; and Lem
Barney of the Lions.
Os the 260 Black
college-trained football players
who went to the NFL training
camps for the 1973 season, 94
were ex-Courier Black
All-American selections,
including 14 members of the
22-man composite 1972 squad.
Sponsorship of the annual
awards banquet is one element
of the Columbus, Ga. based
Royal Crown Cola Co.’s
continuing sports program.

being sought by such NFL
clubs as Miami, Buffalo, Dallas
and Cincinnati.
Among his greatest football
thrills is stopping the huge
