Mrs. Mamie L. Bostic of 1421 Monroe St. is a prime example
of the stability that makes for strong neighborhoods and strong
churches. For the past 29 years she has been active in the
neighborhood known as the Bethlehem Center community.
As with many of the residents in her neighborhood, her
community spirit has been kept activated by the presence of the
Behtlehem Community Center. She has long worked with
neighbors like Mrs. Lena Hopgood, Mrs. Dorothy Evans, and Mrs.
Elizabeth Heath on matters of community concern.
Throughout the years she has had a lasting dedication to voter
registration drives and community clean-up campaigns.
Her obviously sincere interest in her community gained her a
position on the Bethlehem Center Board of Directors. She has
served on this board for the past two years.
Her community work also brought her an affiliation with the
National Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers,
an organization dedicated to neighborhood development.
Mrs. Bostic’s work has a sound basis, as is exemplified by her
church activities. She has served as recording secretary for the Mt.
Zion AME Church on Twiggs Street for more than 25 years. She
is also Sunday School superintendent. Other church-related posts
include district director of Christian Education For Adults, and
membership in the South Georgia Conference AME Zion Church.
This past summer, Mrs. Bostic was in charge of a group of
young people who attended the National Youth Council in
Salisbury, NC. The council was held at Livingstone College in
Salisbury, and was the first National Youth Council ever attended
by young people from her church.
Her work with the young and young at heart keep her too busy
to allow the years to wear her down. She speaks highly of her
pastor, the Rev. G.R. Washington, and Mr. Verlyn Bell, director
of Bethlehem Center. “The enthusiasm and dedication of these
young men is a joy to me,” she says.
After a recent bout with bronchitis, Mrs. Bostic is up and going
again. She is eager to hear about the things she missed out on, and
probably ready to engage in some new community, or church
project.

Hundreds of Augusta College students turned out to enjoy the

GET INVOLVED
The scene was at a main shopping center. As the youth scurri
down, the woman screamed and shrieked, “Stop, thief, stop hi
help, he stole my purse...
it was the height of the shopping season during the holiday
The many shoppers gave way for the lad to escape.
Frightened the boy tossed the bag aside and kept ninnii
smack into an officer. “Where are you going in such a hui
son?” He had no knowledge of the incident. The woman cai
running up to the officer.
“I’m glad you caught him. You’ll pay for this. You’ll go
jail.”
The boy replied. “I didn’t do nothin’ to you lady. You era
or somethin.?”
The lady said, “I’ll take you to court.”
“You can’t prove nothin’, you ain’t got no witness,” the b
said.
The woman answered “I’ve got plenty. That woman right the
she was standing right next to me when it happened. And the
two men, they saw the whole thing. Isn’t that right?” she aske
All three dropped their heads and slowly walked away.
It’s a familiar scene and a strong indication that the could
witnesses didn’t want to GET INVOLVED.
Having to face the possibility of going to the precinct;
possibilities of going to court if the victim were to press chargi

it wasn’t me.”
Whatever the reasons may be, the concern was with Helpi
another. Let’s use that event in relationship with helpi
ourselves.
Yes, it is a fast pace with the world we live in today and at t
scene of a crime, for time sake wanting to GET INVOLVED, yi
have your reasons.
For every reason you can take time out to get involved wi
yourself.
We’ve wasted enough time, so let’s get started right now.
After observing closely, let’s start with our main supporti
anatomically speaking, our back.
It sure stands for a lot of abuse. While watching television, i
curl up in our favorite position, working in the garden, cookir
cleaning, golfing, reading, typing, painting our toenails
crouching to see what the neighbors are doing next door (that c
be painful and time consuming depending on how long you
peeking.
Now that you’ve engaged in these back breaking ventures, t
these exercises for a new relief from back tension.
As a safety precaution, by all means check with your physici
before getting involved with any exercise program, each mornii
before getting out of bed, instead of lying there waiting for t
second alarm to go off do this: Remove pillows (which might
comfortable, but not the greatest for health and beauty saki
Lay flat on your back. Now place arms at sides. RELAX ai
tighten buttocks as much as you can. Release slowly to the cou
of ten. Repeat several times until back bone starts to tingle.
Now for the tangle. Get up! Come on it’s time anyway.
Plant your feet on the floor, spaced about two feet apa
Stretch arms out straight to the side parallel with shoulders no
take a look at those hands and see is last week’s daily hand crea
massages have started to show signs of improvement.
So they have. Good. Now palms up and make small circul
motions toward the back, to the count of ten, reverse, maki
small circles to the front.
DON’T STRAIN: Inhale and exhale slowly during AI
exercises, that’s the key.
Now relax and get ready for the twang.
Place feet in same position as above, hands on hips; now le
forward slowly keeping back straight and bounce, one, tw
three, four times. Now to the left four times, next to the rig
four times, then to the back four times. That was called on s<
RELAX, and do three more sets pausing in-between each si
Work your way up to eight to ten sets.
Don’t say UGH! Inhale, exhale slowly, remember the key.
If that didn’t wake you up write me and I’ll give you sor
more bonus back tingles or twangs (whichever you prefer)
In case you didn’t know it you’ve also started tightening ai
removing flab from your upper arms while whittling your wa:
down. So come on get involved with yourself by starting yo
day out with those exercises. You’ll have much better postui
poise and put more strut in your stride. Ladies, you’
beautifying your back for the halter styles that are in play toda
Here are the finishing touches. If you skin is normal to d
moisturize daily for a more supple back with sheen. If its ext
dry smooth some lotion or oil on your back before stepping in
a warm bath.
If it’s oil give it a warm bath by placing a small amount
cornmeal in a dish and moisten with water to make a paste.
Massage gently covering oily areas completely. This will al
help loosen blackheads that sometimes accompany an oily bac
Wait a few minutes and rinse in the shower. After drying apply
greaseless lotion and polish with a towell by holding towel
both hands gliding it back and forth across your back (anoth
good back exercise for all) this will bring out the natural sheen
an oil back.
By all means splash on some cologne before slipping into th
bar back original you’ve just bought in the right color
compliment your complexion. For sure that will get y<
involved. Now back .... 6,7, 8,9, 10. Keep it up till I see y<
again.
