The arson and conspiracy
conviction of Rev. Chavis and
the Wilminton Ten constitutes
one of the many “official”
attacks on this twenty-eight
year old Black minister. If he is
convicted of all charges
presently pending against him,
he can be sentenced to a prison
of more than two
centuries.
The Watergate investigations
and trials have already revealed
the myriad ways in which
justice has been obstructed and
subverted by those who were
sworn to protect the rights of
all people. In light of these
revelations, it should not be
difficult to believe that Rev.
Ben Chavis is being persecuted
as a result of similar
machinations.

attempting to organize
emergency committees
throughout the country to
defend the Wilmington Ten.
Pressure is being brought on
North Carolina’s new Attorney
General, Rufus Edmisten, who
served as Senator San Ervin’s
main aide in the Watergate
hearings. Since he was so
willing to unearth the
corruption and crimes of
government officials involved
in the Watergate burglary, he
should also be prepared to take
similar action in order to break
the conspiracy against Rev.
Ben Chavis.
If the Wilmington Ten are
set free, this will no doubt
influence the outcome of the
JoAnn Little trial, the
Charlotte Three appeal and all
the other political prosecutions
in the state. Moreover, a
victory for the Wilmington Ten
will have national
repercussions. For the ability
of governments to persecute
political activists will have been
successfully challenged.
The National Alliance is
asking people to write
Attorney GeneralEdmisten in
Raleigh, North Carolina,
demanding that the
persecution of Rev. Chavis and
the Wilmington Ten be halted.
People are being asked to join
local Wilmington Ten
Committees -- and if necessary
to organize a committee.
The date of May 31 has been
selected for a national

fire-fighting ‘‘bean soup.”
Dr. Julian also was one of
the early developers of
cortisone drugs and this work
made him a millionaire.
The scientist was known also
for his synthesis of a drug
called physosgigmine, used in
the treatment of glaucoma.
Percy Julian’s name has been
prominent in the list of
outstanding Black Americans
for four decades.
In addition to his work as a
scientist and a chemist, he also
devoted much time to civil
rights work.
Along with Asa T.
Spaulding, president of the
North Carolina Mutual Life
Insurance Company, Dr. Julian
in 1967 called together a group
of 47 wealthy or highly
successful Black leaders to raise
a million dollars for the Legal
Defense and Educational Fund
of the NAACP.
In 1947, Dr. Julian received
the Spingarn medal, the highest
honor bestowed upon a Black
American by the NAACP. He
had received many other
awards and citations. He held
honorary degrees from 12
colleges and universities. In
1950, he was designated as
“Chicago’s Man of the Year” in
an election conducted by the
Chicago Sun-Times.
Ironically enough, in the
same year that he was “Man of
the Year”, his home in Oak
Park was bombed by hoodlums
who resented having a Black
family move to the all-white
suburb. Later, he became
president of the Oak Park
Page 7
Rotary Club.
In 1951, Dr. Julian was
barred from the Union League
Club of Chicago where he was
scheduled to give a lecture.
Dr. Julian, the grandson of
slaves, was bom April 11,
1899. in Montgomery, Ala.,
one of the six children of
James Sumner Julian, a railway
mail clerk, and Elizabeth
Adams Julian.
He was graduated from De
Pauw Un rsity in 1920,
majoring in chemistry. He was
valedictorian of his class and
was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
He received his M.A. degree
in 1923 from Harvard
University which he attended
on an Austin fellowship. He
also studied at the University
of Vienna where he received
his Ph.D. degree in 1931. There
he studied under Ernst Spath
chemist who developed
nicotine and ephidrene.
Dr. Julian taught at Fisk
University from 1920 to 1922
and from 1925-26 w'as an
assistant at Harvard. He also
had been a professor of
chemistry at West . irginia
State College, at Howard
University, and in 1932
returned to De Pauw to teach
organic chemistry.
Dr. Julian had devoted full
time to research in private
industry since 1936. He
directed the study of the
soybean for the Glidden
Company of Chicago and later
managed its chemicals
development division.
The chemist founded his
own Julian Laboratories, Inc.,
in 1953 and also established
the Julian Laboratories of
Mexico.
