HERBIE HANCOCK •’
The Headhunter Os Jazz
Herbert Jeffrey Hancock
was bom in Chicago in 1940
just when Be-Bop was getting
off the ground. In fact the year
that Herbie was bom, Harlem’s
famous night spot, Minton's
Playhouse was just opening.
Herbie was bom to play
music. He took up piano at the
age of seven because a friend
played one. At the age of
eleven, he was performing
Mozart’s Concerto in D Major
with The Chicago Symphony
Orchestra. While in high school
he heard a fellow student doing
something that he couldn’t
do improvise. So Herbie
worked hard at improvising
using records of Oscar Peterson
and George Shearing as aids.
His first attempt at improvising
was Shearing’s “I’ll Remember
April.”
Herbie was almost punishing
himself seemingly by the long
tedious exercises he used to
practice. He enrolled at lowa’s
Grinnell College to study
engineering in 1956. Shortly
after enrollment he found that
his first love was still music and
he changed his major to music
composition. Lacking a
sociology credit, he did not
receive his diploma but was
awarded an honorary Doctor
of Fine Arts in 1972.
The first star with whom
Herbie played was Coleman
Hawkins. One of his luckiest
moments was when a Chicago
blizzard stranded trumpeter
Donald Byrd's pianist. Byrd,
while trying to find a
replacement, was told that
Herbie Hancock was the best
available substitute around.
Herbie soon became a
permanent member of the
band.
When he got his own group

together, his first album
“Watermelon Man” was a
sizeable success long before
Mongo Santamaria even
thought of it. Herbie later
formed his own publishing
company and Miles Davis gave
him a call. Herbie was very
loyal to Donald Byrd but
Byrd’s group didn’t work often
enough so Miles found himself
a piano player and from 1963
through 1968 Herbie was a
permanent member of the
Miles Davis group. With Miles,
he really developed (Who
wouldn’t) and decided that it
was time to form his own
group. He formed the Herbie
Hancock Sextet. This was a
smashing group and Herbie was
still being sought by many well
known musicians namely Wes
Montgomery, Quincey Jones,
Kenny Dorham, Freddie
Hubbard and Sonny Rollins.
Later he formed the group
known as “The Headhunters”.

Hancock’s big hit album,
“Headhunters” stayed on the
charts for over a year. The hit
single from that album,
“Chameleon” is still heard
frequently. In fact, I heard it
on radio yesterday.
The “Headhunters” are so
versatile that you have got to
see them perform to believe it.
If you listen to any one of
their records a hundred times
you will always hear something
different because there are so
many things going on within
the group that the final sound
effects are out of sight Herbie
had been with Blue Note
Records for a long time but'
now he is doing his thing on
Columbia. His latest album is
“Secrets” and it is just tooooo
much!!!

■ For 15th through 21st rST.mii!— ■„. > f
ARIES - March 21st to April 20th - Excellent lunar aspects on
the 15th favor property matters, family plans, social pleasures.
More of the same on the 16th and 17th, but when the Moon
squares both Mars and Venus on the 18th, your love relationship
may be a bit tense; not a day to make demands or force issues.
The Mercury/Jupiter trine on the 19th enables you to talk your
way out of a sticky situation (possibly related to a romance). The
20th favors career/financial progress and the Mercury/Sun blend
on the 21st is lucky for both love and money.
TAURUS - April 21st to May 20th - Fine lunar aspects on the
15th are helpful for material goals, too, and the Moon/Venus
trine on the 16 th could see you getting deserved financial rewards
for work well done. Avoid over-emotionalism on the 18th, when
the Moon squares Venus and you’re not thinking too clearly. A
short trip may be on your agenda on the 19th, as Mercury trines
Jupiter, while the 20th could bring the solution to a domestic or
family problem that’s been worrying you lately. Mercury’s blend
witfkthe Sun on the 21st makes this a good day.
GbMINI - May 21st to June 20th - Be sure your facts are right
if you challenge anyone on the 15th; the Moon/Neotune
opposition may prompt you to jump to conclusions. The
Moon/Uranus trine on the 17th favors job advancement, but the
18th may bring an upset to social plans. When Mercury trines
Jupiter on the 19th, it’s really your lucky day; be responsive to
opportunity. The 21st is another fine day for you, as Mercury
conjoins the Sun and among favored matters are romance,
creative expression, financial gains and perhaps a chance to travel
soon.
CANCER - June 21st to July 22nd - Fine lunar aspects on the
15th make this a promising day. except for the Moo;./Neptune
opposition which may make you a bit lazy! The 17th is
confusing, so postpone decisions if possible. Adverse lunar aspects
on the 18th and 19th may affect you via restlessness, irritation.
However, the 20th is your day, with the Moon conjoing Saturn,
trining Neptune; love, travel opportunity, financial gains from
creative expression are all possible. On the 21st, the Moon squares
Jupiter, so avoid extravagance with money and/or emotions.
LEO - July 23rd to August 22nd - A very promising period, as
the majority of aspects are now operating in your behalf.
Promote new ideas on the 15th, seek romantic pleasures on the
16th, concentrate on self-improvement and/or creative talents on
the 17th and 18th. The Moon/Uranus square on the 19th may
make you a bit short-tempered, but the Moon’s trine to Neptune
and conjunction with Satuni on the 20th brings a solution to
whatever upset you. When Mercury conjoins the Sun on the 21st,
you should hear good news which concerns money.
VIRGO - August 23rd to September 22nd - Except for a close
relationship, the 15th is a favorable day; discussion with your
love-partner is apt to be mutally confusing! Social plans for the
17th may be unexpectedly altered, as the Moon squares Mercury.
News you hear on the 18th may be unreliable, due to the
Moon/Venus square, but when Mercury trines Jupiter on the 19th
you could receive a nice reward for past efforts. Inner peace is
your with the Moon/Satum blend of the 20th, while the 21st is
really super for realizing a major goal.
LIBRA - September 23rd to October 22nd - The
Moon/Neptune opposition on the 15th wars against entering
agreements unless you carefully check all details. On the 16th,
the Moon/Venus trine is super for your love relationship, while
the Moon/Uranus trine on the 17th denotes unexpected financial
gains. A dispute may arise between you and your love partner on
the 18th, when the Moon squares both Venus and Mars; this can
be amicably settled on the 19th, as Mercury trines Jupiter.
Important news is due on the 21st, when Mercury conjoins the
Sun
SCORPIO - October 23rd to November 22nd - Travel seems to
be in view on the 15th, as lunar aspects favor a change of scene.
On the 17th, the Moon/Uranus trine is another plus for material
gains, possibly through a friend. Others are a bit uncooperative on
the 18th, especially your love-partner, as shown by the Moon’s
square to both Mars and Venus. You’re highly creative but
supertense on the 19th; control tendencies to excess. The 20th
brings excellent lunar aspects which favor career progress, while
the 21st could find you a bit extravagant.
SAGITTARIUS- November 23rd to December 21st - Except
for the Moon/Neptune opposition (which suggests you do not
believe all you hear) the 15th is a great day for your progress;
career, finances, love all being favored. The Moon/Mercury square
on the 17th might bring a minor argument with your partner
concerning money, but the Mercury/Jupiter trine of the 19th
settles this matter nicely. On the 20th, supportive aspects favor
seeking advice or help from friends, but social activity on the 21st
may be more expensive than you bargain for as the Moon squares
Jupiter.
C APRICORN - December 22nd to January 19th - The 15th is a
good day to seek favors from others and the 16th brings a chance
to utilize an influential contact. The 17th and 18th show mixed
aspects; favorable for career/financial aims, not so promising in
personal matters. The Mercury/Jupiter trine on the 19th makes
this a good day to present creative ideas, while the Moon/Satum
conjunction on the 20th is highly favorable for your love
relationship. Avoid speculation or other risky moves on the 21st,
when the Moon squares Jupiter; this is a good day for social
pleasures, however.
AQUARIUS - January 20th to February 18th - On the 15th,
the Moon/Mercury trine is a plus for study, creative work,
long-range plans. Your love relationship benefits from the
Moon/Venus trine on the 16th, while a fortunate Moon/Uranus
aspect on the 17th reemphasizes the job-advancement potential
now. Be prepared to revise social plans for the 18th, and when
the Moon squares Uranus on the 19th tone down impatience,
restlessness. Your love relationship is stabilized by the
Moon/Satum blend of the 20th. Good news on the 21st concerns
someone close to you.
PISCES - February 19th to March 20th - The Moon/Neptune
opposition on the 1 Sth may cloud an otherwise favorable day, as
vour love relationship is less than satisfactory. The Moon/Venus
trine on the 16th, however, improves this situation nicely. On the
18th. adverse lunar aspects reflect on financial plans, which may
need to be revised. Back to your love life; the Mercury/Jupiter
trine on the 19th, the Moon/Neptune trine on the 20th and the
Mercury/Sun conjunction on the 21st are all excellent influences
on love, romance, marriage. These days also favor social plans.
