The first Black American to attain four-star rank in United States military service, General Daniel Janies Jr.,
receives a resolution of commendation from Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn upon his visit to Los
Angeles County. General James is commander in chief of the North American Defense Command and commander
in chief of the U.S. Air Force Aerospace Defense Command. Supervisor Hahn made the presentation as chairman ot
LA. County Military and Veterans Affairs during a ceremony in his Hall of Administration office. General Janies
has been in the U.S. Air Force since he received his commission as second lieutenant in 1943, as a fighter pilot.

The march will assemble at
10:30 a.m. at 9th and
Laney-Walker Blvd, it will
proceed to May Park via 9th
Street to Greene Street to 4th

Speakers from various
organizations in Augusta and
Georgia will climax the march.
Speakers will include Nathaniel
Butler of the Georgia Citizens
Coalition Against Hunger, Rev.
T.H. Fisher, a retired minister,
and Robert Brown of the
American Friends Service
Committee.
The purpose of the rally and
march is to demonstrate
concern for the plight of poor
and oppressed people in our
area and also to show your
support for the right of
oppressed people to determine
their own directions.
The September 11
committee consists of the
Concern Mothers Club,
Augusta Welfare Rights
Organization, National
Association of Black Social
Workers and Straight Ahead.
The rally will begin at 12
noon in May Park.

imperial deputv of the Promotion Department ol the
Imperial Council of Prince Hall Shriners in the southern
area of the United States.
Illustrious Potentate Neal A. McQueen (lett) was a
delegate to the Imperial Council of Prince Hall Shriners
in Los Angeles, Calif. August 16-21.
Registration For Adult General
Education Classes To Begin
Registration for adult
general education classes for
residents of Richmond and
Columbia Counties will be held
September 13-17.
Persons 18 years of age or
older may enrol in either day
or evening clases at an
elementary or high school
level.
The classes are offered to
students who want to obtain a
high school diploma or an
equivalency certificate and for
those who want to review basic
reading, writing and
mathematics. There are also
courses for studying English as
a second language.

The Department of Human Resources is recruiting for a
Health Standards Survey Officer I, paygrade 15, starting
salary $779.50. Position is located in Albany, Georgia,
requiries travel in Southern part of State. Qualifications
require graduation from a college or university of
recognized standing and one year of full-time paid
employment in hospital administration or in work which
involved inspection of physical facilities and investigation
of services in plants or institutions. Other training or
experience if evaluated as equivalent may qualify the
applicant. For further information, contact the State Merit
System no later than September 15, 1976.

Dr. Dorothy Brown was
to the ideals and goals of
Optimist International.
Dr. Washington was
responsible for the
establishment of the Evening
Optimist Club and served as its
first president.
A leading citizen of Augusta,
Dr. Washington is a member of
the Augusta City Council,
retired educator and a member
of numerous civic, fraternal,
and religious organizations.

to the program.
Also honored were: Mrs.
Betty Ford, First Lady and
activist for women’s rights;
Mrs. Gertrude Johnson
Williams, Vice President of
Publishing Company;Mrs. Jean
Hutson, Schomburg Collection,
and Mrs. Dorothy Porter,
Moorland Collection, for
acquiring and cataloging the
visual arts and letters of Black
Americans; and Mrs. Lady Bird
Johnson, humanitarian.
Delta Sigma Theta was
formed in 1913 by twenty-two
young women at Howard
University, Washington, D.C.
Today there are over 85,000
members in 557 chapters in the
United States, Virgin Islands,
Haiti and Liberia. The sorority
programs include scholarships,
educational programs,
international understanding
and projects related to mental
health and health services
delivery.

Inc. is now accepting
applications for persons
desiring to participate in
M ode m/1 nterp re live Dancing,
and Drama.
Even though there is no age
requirement, the Theatre is
especially interested in males
and females from ages 12 to
21.
Applications will be
accepted until October 4th
from 12 noon - 6 pan.,
Monday-Friday, at 1143 Druid
Park Ave., Augusta, Ga.
