GOVERNOR JIMMY CARTER
Carter Blasts
Butz’s Racist Slur
Governor Jimmy Carter,
1976 Presidential Democratic
candidate, blasted Earl
Butz (Sec. of Agriculature) for
his racial slur on “coloreds”.
The Governor made his
, reaction known to a meeting of
Black media representatives in
Cheevy Chase, Maryland
recently.
“I would not permit that
kind of blatant racism to be
expressed by anyone who
serves in my administration. I
think that Mr. Butz should
have been fired a long time
ago. He made a similar
statement about Catholics and
P.O. Box 953
Opportunity Commission
(EEOC) in Atlanta and we
hope that we can get these
problems corrected.”
“I think it is very bad when
the chief of the Richmond
County Fire Department can

that is all Black, make a
telephone call and make a
remark like ‘that nigger luck,’”
stated Johnson.

the grand jury to gather
information on the progressive
movement in Houston. We will
not participate in this type of
witch-hunt and are therefore
refusing to testify.
Frank Converse of the
United Klans of America and
Scott Nelson of Fiery Knights
have publically bragged that
there are many policemen who
are members of the Klan. All
who have refused to testify
face possible indefinite jail
sentences.
Prairie Fire Bookstore,
which sells revolutionary
literature, has received scores
of support messages for the
defense against the Klan attack
from organizations and
individuals in Houston,
including the aunt of author
Edgar Snow. Over twenty
telegrams from around the
country have been received.
There have been two mass
meetings in support. Letters
have been written to Mayor
Fred Hofientz protesting the
prosecution of those who
Italians in his comment about
the Pope in an off-color joke.
“I don’t think there could
be a more obvious racial slur
than what Mr. Butz said. It was
so bad, as you know, that the
newspapers have been reluctant
to publish it. I hope that we
have arrived at the point in our
country where the American
people will be disgusted with
that kind of racial slur,” said
the Governor.
The meeting was forum for
the candidates to express his
views on, and be questioned
about, issues that concern
Blacks and other minorities.
According to Johnson, there
are only twelve Black firemen
in the department In the
county there is no Black chief
officer, one Black captain, two
Black lieutenants and two
Black pump operators.
“I know we have Blacks that
are just as qualified if not more
qualified as whites that they
have in these positions,”
Johnson said.

the Klan attack.
On September 18, the
incident began when two
well-known Klansmen tried to
enter the store, and were
forced to leave. After they
were forced out of the

Klansmen drove up, and got
out of their cars.
As they began to rush the
store the Klansman in the lead,
