BUD POWELL:
Founder Os Modern Jazz Piano
Earl Powell, better known as
“Bud”, was bom in New York
City September 9,1924.
Bud took up the piano at a
very early age and by the time
he became a teenager, he was
very well known by some of
the best musicians around New
York.
Powell was always well
known for his experimentation
on piano. Some called him
“The Charlie Parker Os Piano”
because he did with piano what
Charlie Parker did with alto
sax. His early experiments on
piano at Minton s Playhouse
led to the evolution of Bebop.
Some of Powell’s experiments
included two handed runs,
double handed chord
progressions, single note runs
in which he incorporated a
series of nursery rhymes. These
things having never been done
before, he is considered the

virtual founder of modem jazz
piano.
Powell played with the big
band of Cootie Williams from
1943 until 1944. Later he
worked with Dizzy Gillespie,
Don Byas and others.
Playing long hours nightly
and having many things on his
mind led to problems and soon
he was troubled by emotional
illnesses and became almost
completely inactive. After a
semi-recovery he worked
intermittently with several
groups.
After being sporadically
active in New York through
the 1950’5, he took up
residence in France in 1959.
He worked there regularly, his
health somewhat improved
until 1962, when he was
stricken with tuberculosis.
After a long battle with TB
and a long period of

convalesance he returned to
activity.
Almost two years later he
arrived back in New York for
what was supposed to be a very
brief visit. However after
working briefly at Birdland, he
disappeared and his projected
return to Paris never
materalized.
Seriously ill and almost
entirely inactive for the rest of
his lire, he died July 31, 1966
in a Brooklyn hospital.
Bud Powell, a giant who will
never be replaced, only
remembered.
