at the college Sunday.
Terrell responded by reading
a number of his poems and
answering audience questions
about his works and future

Terrell, 25, has his own
publishing company. He
publishes a quarterly literary
bulletin. He recently published
a Black Periodical to Literature

NAHRW’s Committee on the
Status of Minority Elected
Officials.
Cited in the report are over
100 Black officials who have
been victims of various forms
of harassment. The officials
represent all regions of the
country, all levels of office,
and both urban and rural areas.
Research findings indicate,
though that “the higher the
level of office, or the more
outspoken the official, or the
greater the influence and
power, the higher the incidence
of harassment.”
Black officials indentified as
having been targets of attack
include the late U. S. Rep.
Adam Clayton Powell, UJS.
Rep. William Clay of Missouri,
Lt. Gov. George Brown, Lt.
Gov. Mervyn Dymally, and

In February, Terrell will
return to his native Akron,

He plans to compile a book

an audience with your
historical concern, I need not
dwell on the marshaling of
arguments which would
establish the fact that the USA
is a racist nation’ Continuing,
he added: “We live in a sick
society. The avaricious greed of
the early pioneers was joined in
struggle by those seeking
special privilege and favors in
the founding conventions of
the young nation, in which the
supporters of materialistic
values won the day against
those of humanistic values.
“As we look back,”
Goodlett said, “in this 201st
year of the founding of the
nation, its history makes
mockery of the American
paean, ‘Freedom, Liberty,
Justice and Equality!’ For 201
years, property rights have
been inviolate when in contest
with human rights.
“From the landing at
Plymouth,” the publisher
charged, “the activities of the
white settlers and now the
white majority began and
sustained a ravenous,
plundering march of physical
and human exploitation which
nearly destroyed the Red Man
and for more than 249 years,
dehumanizing Blacks in
horrendous slavery.”
“And even today,” he
continued, “all the judicial,
legislative and excutive
machinations have not
permanently freed Blacks from
the status of second-class
citizens.
“The truth is,” Goodlett
said, “that all of the landmark
political victories, the Supreme
Court judicial victories, and the
legislative victories have
disturbed very little the
relationship between the white
masters and the Black slaves
who endured two and a half
centuries of hell, as well as
between the white majority
and the present day Blacks
who inhabit the core cities of
America 114 years after
Lincoln’s Emancipation
Proclamation.
“Can a Black America be
saved?” he asked. “Who will
save Black America? Yes, Black
America can be saved, but only
Black America can and must
save itself! Little help can be
expected from any other
quarter!!”

We were taken to see part of
these defenses on the island of
Chinmen (Quemoy) by Major
General Liu Wan-Tsai, deputy
commander of its defenses. At
some points the island is less
than two miles from the
mainland.
Immediately after joining in
the observance of Confucius’
2,527th birthday, we boarded
a military aircraft to fly to a
secret destination. As soon as
we boarded the plan, we were
strapped into life jackets. This
made me a little apprehensive,
since on commercial airlines
they only show you one jacket
and explain how it works in
time of emergency. Here, we
were already harnessed up as if
an emergency was sure to
occur.
My fears were further
aroused by the long flight over
the Formosa strait to the secret
destination. The strait is only
100 miles wide and 200 miles
long, and we had been flying
for more than an hour. I began
to wonder if our plans might
somehow fly too close to Red
China and perhaps be fired on.
But before I could pursue this
line of fearful thought much
further, the plane landed and
all 16 of us disembarked
without 'ncident.
There were: Mr. and Mrs.
William O. Walker, Cleveland
Call and Post, leaders of our
delegation; Mr. and Mrs.
Charles E. Belle, San Francisco
Sun Reporter; Mr. and Mrs.
James L. Hicks, National
Newspaper Publishers
Association (NNPA); Dr. and
Mrs. Alfred L. Morris,
Philadelphia Tribune; Brad Pye
Jr., Los Angeles Sentinel;
Redfem 11, South Carolina
newspaper chain; Mr. and Mrs.
Garth C. Reeves Sr., Miami
Times; Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Roberts, Amalgamated
Publishers, Inc., and Chicago
Daily Defender; my, Revella,
and I.
General Liu had his staff
give us a quick briefing and
then he took us in two buses
all over the small island. There
were troops and trenches and
camouflaged gun
emplacements everywhere. The
Republic of China has a well
trained and equipped armed
force of 600,000, thousands of
modem tanks, and a 500-plane
air force. And to protect the
population, there are miles and

miles of tunnels through
mountains to serve as bomb
shelters in time of war.
Even on the small island of
Chinmen, we were driven
through tunnel after tunnel
where we saw the stockpiles of
food and water and
ammunition stored. Up and
down the highways, we passed
smiling school children in their
handsome uniforms, homes of
brick or stone, farmers growing
crops of vegetables and rice
and sorghum on their own
farms. Some had tractors and
other farm implements as
modern as those in Illinois or
Iowa; others were farming with
one-row plows and water
buffaloes. But all seemed
happy and energetic.
Frequently, we passed
trucks and cars and men on
bicycles. All graciously gave
our buses the right-of-way,
recognizing their general’s blue
and white command flag beside
the windshield blowing in the
breeze as we sped along.
In addition to seeing the
military preparations, we also
saw samples of the country’s
psychological warfare. Radio
and TV broadcasts, and at
points on the island near the
China mainland, there were
blaring loudspeakers telling the
Communists of the good life
on Taiwan. And to prove it,
there were launching sites from
which food packages and
literature were sent by
hundreds of balloons daily to
the people on the mainland.
And the food in the
packages was very tasty.
Hearing that food prices were
so high in Japan, where we
were headed after Taiwan, we
carried some of it along, just in
case.
One of the main weapons in
Taiwan’s psychological warfare
arsenal is Lt. Col. Fan
Yuan-yen, a 40-year-old pilot
who defected from Communist
China, bringing his supersonic
Mig-19 with him. We visited
with the colonel and talked
with him about his 21 years in
the mainland China air force.
With its psychological
warfare, 600,000-man armed
force, tanks and 500 fighter
planes and bombers backed up
by an industrial complex steel
mill, ship building corporation,
pretroleum refineries, 2300
miles of standard and narrow
gauge railway, a harbor that
acommodated 13,000 ships last
year, and an airport that
handled 50,000 flights.
And in its duty-free export
processing zone, 43,000
Chinese are building everything
from Timex watches to RCA
TV sets to Ford motor cars.
