————— Geneva Y. Gibson ,
Many columns have
discussed and analyzed the
mass suicide at Guyana, but
Elizabeth Hood, columnist for
the Michigan Chronicle
uniquely examines possible
cause as well as effect for the
debacle.
She states that observations
of the mass suicide suggest an
examination of the ways in
which society in the U.S. fails
to provide reasonable
alternatives for those, who in
periods of either transition or
depression, feel the need for
finding meaning in life.
Whether the suicides could
have been prevented is
debatable in the light of the
commitment of the people to
the Rev. Jones’ leadership.
Mrs. Hood further observes
that the most effective
preventive for fanatical cult
membership is the
development of stable, but
flexible personality traits
which enable individuals to
endure stress and change
without sacrificing the will to
think for themselves.
Jordan Grove Baptist
Church of which the Rev. J.R.
Thurmond is pastor, was
observed die Ist Sunday in
January as having the type of
program for its membership
that supports the total person.
The pastor’s message, his
comments and approval of
community projects, the plans
for coordination of programs,

become one of the best
known —and also best-used—
texts in black America. There
is among us an almost “built
in” sense that others must do
for us. During the years of the
Great Depression, we used to
sing: “Jesus Christ will lead
me, and F.D.R. (Franklin
Delano Roosevelt) will feed
me. What cause have we,
then, for fear?”
We have become far too
dependent a people. We must
come to know the truth—
“We can!”

unnatural; it is contrary to
God’s plan for man.
We may wish to complain
that others force idleness

Recently, St. Mary’s
Episcopal Church with Mrs.
Ann Brown as coordinator,
presented “the Feast of
Lights.” This pageant,
according to Mrs. Brown, has
been presented annually at St.
Mary’s since 1966. It
dramatically portrays events
beginning with the prophecy of
the birth of Christ through His
birth, highlights of His
ministry, death, and the
beginning of the apostolic
regime in the church. The
drama shows the sequence of
the apostles through the
present leaders of the church
including those with particular
connection to Augusta’s St.
Mary’s Episcopal Church. Mr.
Clarence Hollis and Mr. John
H. Latimer served as narrators.
Madison Avenue for many
years has spent time and
money through the press and
other communications media
to assure us what we should
eat, wear, or what companies
or institutions we should
believe in. Should not the

stablizing influence it can

us something.” But others
cannot keep us in any un
natural state contrary to
God’s will without our will
ingness to some degree. We
must know and affirm: “I
can do all things.”
3. Our strength is found in
our life in God. With and in
God all things are possible
for us. Our lives are made to
be lived in God’s life. Our
lives are designed so that
God’s strength is our
strength. Our lives are struc
tured so that nothing less
than divine good can make
our lives complete.
Hence also, God has built
the fabric of our being in
such a uniquely grace-filled
way that we each and all can
say with absolute confidence,
“I can do all things in Him
who strengthens me.”
