Woman's World
NEW PRESIDENT FOR
LOCAL NAACP
Congratulations are being
extended to Mrs. Georgine
Hatcher Seabrook who was
recently elected president of
the Augusta Branch NAACP.
Her experience with the local
branch includes service on the
executive committee and
chairperson of the Legal
Redress Committee. It is
believed that Mrs. Seabrook is
the first women to head the
local NAACP which was
founded by Dr. Lucy C. Laney
during the World War 1 era.
Mrs. Seabrook is the daugther
of the late Mrs. Marie Hatcher,
who was Augusta’s outstanding
civic leader and teacher. Her
1979 NAACP branch program
was shared with the
membership at last Monday
night’s meeting.
Dr. Marianna W. Davis,
professor of English at
Benedict College in Columbia,
S.C. has begun a two-year
research project on
Contributions of Black Women
to the growth and development
of the United States over the
past 200 years. Dr. Davis will
direct the project and had the
first year funding of $193,913
under the women’s
Educational Equity Act of the
U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare. There
will be ten booklets covering
the fields of medicine,
education, law, media, civil
rights, business, sports, science,
politics, and the arts. Dr. Davis
said, “Writers of history and
humanities school books,
especially, have omitted the
active, aggressive, achieving and
constructive roles of black
women in America Society,
and school curricula at all
levels, including those in
women’s studies and black
studies, have failed to address
adequately the contributions
of black women.” She further
stated that the Benedict
research project is aimed at
making information on
Achieving black women “easily
accessible to people in general
and blacks in particular.”
