The silent church
By Kenneth W. Cummings
The Bakke case, The Weber
case. The Sears case. The
resurgence of the Ku Klux
Klan. What do these things
have in common? Collectively
and individually, the pose a
threat to the civil rights of
blacks and other minorities in
this country, In spite of the
gains that blacks have made in
America over the last 25 years
do not be deceived: racism is
alive and doing well. It is seen
in every sector of our society --
politics, business, labor and the
church.
While black civil rights
activists and clergypersons take
to the street rallying for their
God-given rights, the
government and the white
church, for the most part, have
remained silent.
In the ’sos and especially
the ’6os, the heyday of civil
rights activism, the F. 8.1.,
C.1.A., G. 8.1. and municipal
authorities launched an attack
on various organizations --
Black Panthers, SCLC, SNCC --
that were considered a threat
to the moral fiber of America.
Phones were bugged; letters
were opened; names were
slandered. Blacks and
sympathetic whites were shot
at and killed . Each
governmental agency defended
its investigations as being in the
best interest of America. And
through it all the white church
was silent.
Ironically, this same church
did not hesitate to speak out
on other social ills. Case in
point. Let some businessperson
try to invade a “drv” county
with legislation pertaining the
sale of alcoholic beverages.
What about the recent
onslaught of clergypersons
opposing the sale of liquor on
Sundays in restaurants and
similar places. Also,
Georgia Usher Union to convene
The Christian Usher Union
of Georgia will convene Sept.
29-30 at the Oakey Grove
Baptist Church in Ebans, Ga.
Sermons will be delivered by
the Rev. Tommy Scott and the
Rev. William Jones.

spokespersons for religious
conventions are quick to read,
on national television I might
add, resolutions that
convention delegates adopted
on homosexuality. And if they
try to take prayer completely
out of the public school
system, Lawd, help us. And the
school board better not try to
push Darwin’s “Origin of the
Specie” and omit the
“Creation Story” in Genesis.
The white clergy is basically
united on what some would
consider these demoralizing
issues. But when it comes to
racism and oppression where
goes the “marching”
consensus?
The late W.E.B. Dubois was
right when he said the greatest
problem America will face in
the 20th century is race, not
energy, unemployment nor
inflation.
Blacks and other minorities
cannot rely on the Supreme
Court to arrest that malignant,
cancerous growth of racism
while handing down ambiguous
decisions, first siding with
Bakke, then against Weber. We
cannot rely on congress which
passes legislation prohibiting
discrimination on the basis of
race and then turns around and
discriminates in its hiring of
aides. If in fact America is to
transcend the barrier of racism,
it will take the concerted effort
of the “institutional church,”
barring no race nor
denomination. In short, the
white church must speak out.

A thought to live by
By Emam Aqeel K. Hasan
The family unit is the base
on which society should be
built. You must be active in
assuming tire responsibility for
yourself and family. Work hard
to protect yourself and your
family members from the
many destructive forces that
are designed to destroy family
life. When you go shopping,
shop as a family; when you eat,
eat as a family. The members
of the family, should plan for
the family. So plan today for
tomorrow, and if your plan
works or even if it fails,
remember God is the best of
planners.
As-salaam-Alaikum
Peace be unto you.
