The Christian
An athlete is a person
trained in exercises or games
requiring physical strength,
skill and speed. The chief
business of an athlete is to
apply this training to the best
of his or her abilities in order
to win the prize or game they
may be engaged in. The apostle
Paul often referred to the
Christian as an athlete: I
Corinthians 9:24 “Know ye
not that they which run in a
race run all, but receiveth the
prize? So run that ye may
obtain.”
One of the most enduring
things Jesus left on earth was
not faith or healing miracles,
but it was the training of the
twelve. By training they
learned endurance,
preserverance, and skill in the
manner of which it took to win
the prize, and certainly the
prize was won in that
Christianity was broadcast
throughout the world. It is
imperative that we become a
specialist in life and not an
opportunist of life.
May I say to our young
people, there is a beam of
academic excellency in the text
verses: “Know ye not that they
run in a race run all, but
receiveth the prize? So run that
ye nay obtain.” Notice Paul
uses the word “run”, not walk.
You move faster, apply more
energy when you run, “so run
that ye may obtain.”
Always know that loosing
the battle does not always
mean you have lost the victory.
For there is an unseen victory
in defeat but this victory can

only be seen through the eyes
of excellency: Our fore-parents
sing this theology in a simple
but profound way. “When I
done the best I can I want my
Lord to say well done.” “So
run that ye may obtain.”
Christianity is applicable to
the athlete and the athlete to
the academic career. These are
the prizes in life and any prize
sought after or won requires a
well disciplined mind. The
m ind must become disciplined
to receive and achieve. This
means that priorties must be
set in order: T.V. must go off,
discos must be altered, dates
must take rain checks, time
must be sacrificed, if you are
to excell. You cannot excell
being ordinary, prizes do not
belong to ordinary
performance but to the
extraordinary.
There is enough time from
sunlight until dark to meet the
ordinary requirements of life.
But for those who wish to
excell sunlight to dark is not
enough. They are not satisfied,
they light the lamp and go
beyond the sunlight in order to
win the prize. If you wish to
achieve academic excellency in
this life you must move from
ordinary to the extraordinary.
“So run that ye may obtain.”
Jesus Christ was
extraordinary because He went
beyond ordinary to the
extraordinary. The ground
became His bed, a rock His
pillow, the sky His cover, and a
brook His water fountain.
Birds had nest, foxes had dens,
but the son of man had no
where to lay his head. It was
because He went beyond the
regular call of duty, there was
something about His presence
that guaranteed Him
recognition and rank. My
fellow Christians life wasn’t
promised to be fair to any of
us, he who would think it so
wakes up in the early tide of
disappointment.
Jesus did not promise to
save us from our trials and
tribulations, but He promised
to give us strength to get
through them, the author of
