Early reports
indicated Brickie might
have encountered a
burglar or been surprised
by a robber as he
returned home, but
investigators would not
elaborate.
Strength said only
that “the case is under
investigation.’’
Strength did confirm
that a metal cash box was
missing from the house.
Brickie reportedly took
the box home with him
from work m ost nights.
According to an early
report, there were signs
of a struggle at the house,
but Strength said that
was incorrect.
A screen on a side
window of the house was
torn out. Strength would
not say whether the torn
screen may be connected
to the incident.
Neither of Brickie’s
automobiles, a late
model compact and a
larger sedan, were taken
from the house. However,
the lights on the larger
car, sitting in the carport,
had been left on
overnight.

investigators found
“some physical evidence
linking him to the
crime,” Dykes said. He
said that premature
release of the nature of
the evidence could
prejudice its use in court,
and declined to say what
that evidence is.
Dykes and Chief
Investigator Johnny O.
Beard said the break in
the case represents a new
effort to dig into unsolved
crimes, and murders in
particular.

brickie s motorcycle,
which Strength said the
victim frequently took to
work, was still parked at
the dry-cleaning shop.
Brickie’s body was
taken to University
Hospital, where an
autopsy is scheduled to be
held today.
Several neighbors of
the slain man in the quiet,
white-collar subdivision
said they were at home
Friday night but heard
nothing unusual. Brickie’
residence is adjoined by
one other residence, a
playground on one side
and pine woods in the
back.
Brickie's killing was
the second recent slaying
to shake Montclair
residents. Just a block
away from Brickie’s
residence is the house
where kidnap-murder
victim Valerie White
Newsome grew up and
where her mother still
resides.
Neighbors expressed
shock that such tragedy
should strike someone in
their quiet neighborhood.
“If you can’t be safe
in this neighborhood, you
can’t be safe
anywhere,” said one.
They described
Brickie as a hard
working, quiet man who
lived alone and kept to
himself but was always
ready with a smile and a
cheerful word.
Brickie was so
punctual, “could set your
watch by him, said one
man. Six days a week he
was on his way to work by
7:30 a.m. not returning
home until about 8
p.m.,he said.
A resident of the
quiet street for 12 years,
Brickie lived alone since
his divorce about lOyears
ago, according to one
family member.
Brickie’s former wife,
their two sons and
daughter live in Texas, he
