Memorial For Joe Coles
A memorial service
for Joseph C Coles, long
time civil rights leader and
pioneer in the Democratic
party in Michigan, we held
Saturday, Aug. 29, at
Plymouth Congregational
Church.
Mr. Coles, 78. died
Aug. 19 following a heart
attack.
Bom in South Boston,
Va., Mr. Coles was
educated at Paine College
and Howard University. In
his early career, he was
founder of Negro
Democrats in the State of
Michigan and the Detroit
Council for Political
Education, an organization
of Black business,
professional and civic
leaders devoted to political
education in the Black
community.
In his professional
career, he was a pioneer in
development of the human
relations field and a
founder of the National
Assn. of Inter-Group
Relations Officials. He
served as assistant director
erf the Mayer’s Inter-Racial
Committee under Mayor
Albert E. Cobo and later as
deputy director of the
City's Commission on
Community Relations.
Following his
retirement from that post at
age 67, he became a
referee for the State Civil
Tau Gamma Delta Sorors
Attend Boule
Four delegates from
the Kappa (Augusta)
Chapter of the Tau Gamma
Delta Sorority, Inc. recently

member of the NAACP and
its Freedom Fund Dinner

leader of the United Negro

Georgia and on the streets
of New York City, which as
preserved its dignity and its
pride," he concluded.
Hughes received two
standing ovations.
Known locally and
nationally for ..his
contributions to educational
and economic programs,
Hughes is the recipient of
many awards, among them
the Congressional Black
Caucus Recognition Award,
the Harriet Tubman
Achievement Award, and
the Man of the Year Award
for Morrisania Educational
Council.
He resides in Queens
Village. New York with his
wife and three children.
He is the son of Mrs.
Magnolia McCloud of
Millen.
