Chamber of Commerce, he
has worked for the
economic advancment of
Augusta business with
special push for Black
business. He is an officer
of Antioch Baptist Church.

television and radio and
quoted in the press as she

YMCA and League of

Mrs. Powell helped her
neighborhood group secure
a grant from the National
Citizens Monitoring Project
in Washington, D.C. to
help monitor community
development programs.
She’s also coordinator for
Augusta Inter-Community
Organization Council
comprised of several
neighborhood associations.
She’s also working with a
new health project seeking
to locate and counsel
former workers and their
families who may have
been harmed by the
chemical BNA several years
ago.
Retired Sgt. Edwin
Dove- A combat soldier of
World War I, he is
Augusta's oldest combat
veteran. Sgt. Dove gave
Dr. I.E. Washington
major leadership in getting
the Walter Jackson Post of
VJ-W and the Screen-
Ramsey Post of the
American Legion organized
in Augusta. He’s a former
trustee and deacon at
Tabernacle Baptist church.
Mrs. Ruby McNatt
Scott- Once a star athlete at
Haines Institute. she
studied Physical Education
at Columbia University and
attended the Calif. School
of Dance. She retired after
4<> years teaching in the
public schools. A member
of the Women's Civic Club
which aids children. She is
active with labernacle
Baptist church being a
trustee, chairman of the
gospel chorus and president
of the labernacle Child
Nursery. Mrs. McNatt is ai
national trustee with the
Haines Institute Alumni
Association.
Mrs. Luvenia M.
Pierson- Many describe her
as the most influential
leader in the beauty
business. She founded the
Luvenia School of
Cosmotlogy in 1942. It
trained hundreds of young

Insurance Company of Augusta, Georgia announced that the company recorded rpoflts through June 30,
1981 of $253,123.00. This represents a gain of $408,762.00, or 262.6 per cent over Jnne 30,1980. Pilgrim
has increased its capital and surplus by $279,775.00, or 55.2 per cent from Jnne 30, 1980.

graduate of Savannah State
College. she recently
retired as an instructor of
cosmotlogy with the public
schools. A member of
Trinity CME church, she’s
secretary of Tau Gamma
Delta sorority and member
ot the Savannah State
Alumni.
Lt. Eddie J. Oliver. -
Augusta's first Black
policeman. retired in
January after 30 years
service. Despite many
barriers and problems, he
moved up the ladder to
corporal, sergeant and then
lieutenant. A hard working
and diligent officer he was
cited by the City Council
and J u dical Commission
upon retirement. A member
of the American Legion.
Screen-Ramsey Post, he is
a long lime officer of the
Mt. Zion A.M.E.Z. church.
Mrs. Josephine Allen
Richardson - Retired after
2X years as Registrar at
Paine College. She's been a
member and officer of
such community betterment
service groups as the Links,
A.K.A. and the Women's
Civic Club A pioneer
Black member of the
League of Women's Voters
back in the early 19605, she
was also on its television
meet the candidates panel.
She is a specialist in local
Black history and a
member of the NAACP.
Her church membership is
at Union Baptist.
George Bryant
" Genial George” is a solid
churman having served for
many years as an officer of
Thankful Baptist church. A
Paine College graudate and
former teacher, he retired
after a 30 year career in
the U.S. Postal Service. A
former officer of Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity, he gave
service in advancing its
varied community and
youth betterment projects.
He was a staff associate at
the Thankful Nursey
School.
Mrs. Mary Utley- Her
voice sounding out for
justice, equality and aid for
the less fortunate is often
heard and seen over radio,
television and in the press.
She helped organized the
Hyde Park Community
( enter in 1968 and is its
Staff Director. Named
"( ilizen of the Year" by
Alpha Phi Alpha. Mrs.
I tlery works actively in
energv protection for the
poor. educational and
tutorial projects for children
and better neighborhood
conditions. An officer of the
Bottslord Baptist Church
she's an activist with the
SCLC.
Mrs. Christine Gamer -
She taught at Walker
Baptist Institute and other
schools, was recreation
supervisor in the city and
later became an executive
with the local USO agency.
Mrs. Gardner has been
cited for her outstanding
skill and thoroughness in
assisting thousands of
military personnel stationed
at Fort Gordon but living
and visiting in the Augusta
area. A member of the
Women’s Civic Club, she is
an officer of historic
Springfield Baptist church.
Her leadership has helped

Charles Williams
Served with the 93 Division
in combat in the Pacific
Theatre. Upon returning
home he accepted an
assignment as a civilian
assistant at Fort Gordon
and last summer retired
after 30 years tenure. Mr.
Williams has served
continously for 22 years as
secretary of the Augusta
branch of the NAACP. said
to be the longest tenure in
that group's history. A Boy
Scout leader, he has been
Superintendent of the
Second Mt. Moriah Baptist
church Sunday School and
is a trustee.
Dr. I.E. Washington-
Before retirement as
principal with a 4()-year
record he outfitted and sent
the Lucy Laney School
Band to march in a
Presidential Emigration and
was successful in helping
get Dr. Lucy C. Laney’s
portrait placed in the state
capitol building. His
leadership in a 1930 Paine
College student strike has
been described as helping
save its credibility and
"bringing a long overdue
breath of fresh air." Now
a city councilman, he holds
long time board
membership in the YMCA,
Boy Scouts and other
groups. He’s been an
Omega Psi Phi basileus and
president of the then Black
Georgia Teachers and
Education Association and
of the Teachers Agency of
Georgia (TAGI which

William Baxter- A
skilled and adroit political
leader who is currently vice
chairman and chaplain of
the Richmond County
Democratic Committee. Mr.
Baxter twice served on the
City Council and for six
years on the Civil Service
Commission. As president
of the Progressive Political
Club, he has mounted
active registration and get
out the vote campaigns. As
a veteran officer of Bethel
/\ME church, he has
helped in its phsyical
growth and expansion of
community assistance
programs. He is a retired
employee of the Pullman
Co.
H.R. Scott - Mr. Scott
is the retired vice president
of Pilgrim Health and Life
Insurance Company and the
first Black to serve on the
Civil Service Commission

and also as its chairman.
As an NAACP officer
during the mid-1960s he
helped open job
opportunities and push
integration. A graduate of
Morehouse College he was
first Polemarch of Kappa
Alpha Psi and is credited
in smarting a major
scholarship aid campaign.
Mrs. Allie Will
Gardiner- Trained in social
sciences at Fisk University
and Atlanta University
Social Work School, she has
been employed at
Bethlehem Community
Center since 1928. Despite
retirement five years ago,
she continues her work with
vouth and senior citizens on
a voluntary basis. This
constitutes 53 years of
continous professional
service, one of the longest
in the nation and which has
brought several awards.
Hundreds of families and
individuals have been
trained and counseled by
her. She's a member and
youth choral coordinator at
Trinity CME church.
Dr. Charles Butler -
Known as ' "Augusta's
Man at the N.E.A.," he
received the National
Education Association's H.
H. R. SCOTT
Council Trenholn award for
distinguished human
relations leadership. Butler
served with courage as
president of the 13.000
member Black Georgia
Teachers and Educators
Association. After merger
with the new Georgia
Education Association he
sat on its executive Board.
A local principal for 40
years, he now a member
of the Augusta Housing
Authority board. .As
president of Alpha Phi
Alpha he helped expand its
youth scholarship and
community projects and is
an officer of Mt. Calvary
Baptist church.
Elbert “Spunkum"
Blocker ■ Has held many
high positions with both the
Prince Hall Masons and the
Shriners. being responsible
for added community
betterment from them. He
is a 33 degree Mason. He
landed with the American
Army in the invasion of
France in 1944. fought
valiently and was wounded.
He is a recipient of the
Purple Heart. Bronze Star
and Legion Merit for
combat leadership. Former
Sergeant-Major Blocker is
now commander of one of
the local Disabled American
Veterans posts.
Community youth
Sunday was conceived by
the pastor of the Morris
Grove Baptist church in
Millen, the Rev. W.B.
Tomlin. The idea has since
received backing from the
Zion Baptist Church,
Nannie E. Williams United
Methodist church, Kelsey
Chapel Baptist church and
lota lota Zeta Chapter of
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Presentations are held
fifth Sunday at these four - -
churches on a rotating
basis. ■'
