Lowery throws penalty on NFL
for unsportsmanlike conduct
ATLANTA—“The
moral judges of the
universe are throwing the
yellow flag on flagrant
violations by team
owners in the National
Football League, and
charging them with un
sportsmanlike conduct,
for their failure to hire
blacks as head
coaches...,” charged
SCLC President Joseph
E. Lowery.
“Presently, there are
four teams, including the
Atlanta Falcons, seeking
head coaches and so far
as we have been able to
determine, none of these
teams has mentioned
consideration of an Afto-
American as head
coach.”
“These owners and
general managers are

blacks and all Americans,
and invalidates the claim
of exemplary sportsman
ship and fair play,” said
Lowery.
“We urge the owners
of these four teams to
right this wrong, and
consider such persons as

executive order to in
tegrate the armed services
in 1948. The Tuskegee
Airmen also fought
against segregation on
these shores in what came
to be known as “The
Freeman Field Mutiny.”

Lowery also urged the
founders of the new
United State Football
League to begin their
bold venture with a new
level of equity in
professional football, by
employing blacks as head
coaches and in executive
positions.
He pointed out that

men and women par
ticipated in the ex
periment contributed in
various ways and paved
the way for the
desegregation of
American society.

chronicles the evolution
of the “Red Tailed
Angels,” as they were af
fectionately called by the
white bomber crews they
protected, up to their
present-day activities.

The CWEP worker does not
receive any additional benefits and

There are virtually no incentives to
the worker. If the worker refuses
to cooperate she is cut off of the

The federal law requires that
welfare recipients should not be
forced to work if any expense is to
be incurred on the worker. At least
one county in Georgia is violating
this law.

then and is failing nationally now.
But the fear of many activists and
advocates is that the public misun
derstanding of the intent of work
fare programs may help to keep
workfare around longer than it
should be.
Workfare clearly hurts welfare
recipients but it also hurts the
worker who is threatened by
