NAACP
plans Black
dollar day
NEW ORLEANS—
NAACP Executive Direc
tor Benjamin L. Hooks
today launched a “Black
Dollar Day” program to
drive home to the white
business sector across the
nation the extent to which
their survival depends on
money spent by Black
consumers.
The program is aimed
at demonstrating the
NAACP’s determination
to open up more job and
business opportunities
for Blacks without resor
ting to selective buying
tactics or boycotts.
On Labor Day
weekend, the NAACP will
lead Blacks in using only
$2 bills and Susan B. An
thony dollar coins for
purchases of goods and
service. “By so doing,”
Hooks said, “we will say
to merchants that a
significant portion of
their income is derived
from the Black com
munity and that we are
insisting upon our fair
share of the job and en
trepreneural oppor
tunities which are
available.”
To test “Black Dollar
Day,” as the program is
called, delegates atten
ding the NAACP 74th
Annual Convention in
New Orleans exchanged
currency for the
designated $2 bills and
coins at a specially
arranged booth.
