AUGUSTA AREA PLANNED
PARENTHOOD ASSOCIATION,
Almost everyone in Georgia would agree that in this modern
American world women have both the right to choose when to
have a child and also the right to decide exactly how many
children they want to bring into this world.
But one group in our society has been systematically denied
the right, particularly if they don’t have much money. This group
is the unmarried teenagers.
Generally the unmarried teenage girl can get medical advice
only after she has paid the price of at least one unwanted and
perhaps illegitimate baby. Yet this is the very penalty from which
the woman’s right to choose is supposed to protect her.
Many leading doctors declare that the sexually active teenage
girl faces many health hazards both to herself and to her children
if she is not given family planning advice by a properly qualified
counselor. Here are some of the hazards: premature birth; still
birth; miscarriage; brain damage while being born; and infant
mortality brought on by the little one’s weakness.
If the baby does survive he faces a much higher risk of dying
the first month. Or he would be damaged otherwise because of
the poor, youthful mother’s neglect or ignorance, perhaps even
being beaten, burned, starved or tortured -- it happens every day.
For the teenage mother herself, the medical prediction is also
very high risk, both while she is carrying the baby, and at the
time of delivery.
Many social problems arise; Some are:
Over 50% of all Georgia babies born to unmarried mothers
were born to teenage girls in 1969; Forced dropping out of
school; Ending of education and training; A life of poverty for
both mother and child; and possibly forced marriages without
real love and with no hope.
Prejudice, long-standing community prejudice, is what has
made for past reluctance to help teenagers prevent these serious
social problems. This prejudice says that giving family planning
counseling blesses and spreads promiscuity, disease and
illegitimacy.
However, many recent social studies indicate that receiving
family planning counseling has little to do with sex relations,
marital or non-marital. People are going to do what they believe
and have been raised to do, with or without contraceptive
information. This fact of life.
The only real difference is, that without contraceptive
information many teenagers are going to produce: unwanted
babies, dangerous abortions, and torn-up young lives.
In the Georgia Code, Title 99, Ch. 99-31 authorizes health
departments to provide family planning services to persons who
are either - married, parent of at least one child, or pregnant.
Then in 1968 our wise Georgia legislators added a new section,
Act 974, Georgia Laws, 1968. This authorizes family planning
services to: any person requesting such services. Georgia legal
authorities state that this includes unmarried minors (teenagers -
male and female).
In Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah you may call on Planned
Parenthood for help. But actually you should be able to go to
your local health department and just ask. If 1 may be of
confidential service to you, write me, care of this newspaper.

In Memorium
Sunday May 30, memorial
services were held for Mr.
Harry Lee Thompson at St.
Mark United Methodist
Church.
Mr. Thompson departed this
life January 20, 1971. He grew
up and received his early
training in Fort Smith, Ark.
and Stillwater, Oklahoma. He
began his college training in
George R. Smith College,
Sedalia, Missouri. While there,
he became a member of a
musical group that traveled to
raise funds for the school and
in turn take care of his own
expenses. In his junior year,
the college having been
destroyed by fire, he and the
entire group were transferred
to Rust College, Holly Springs,
Miss.
At Rust he met the young
lady who was to become his
wife, the former Ora Leontine
Crawford.
After completing his work at
Rust, he became Principal of
the School at Amory, Miss.
While there, he and his faculty,
were chosen by the State along
with other High Schools from
14 Southern States to receive a
five-year grant from the Ford
Foundation to study school
and community problems at
Fisk University, Nashville,
Tenn. He received his Masters
Degree in Administration from

HOME LOAN FRAUDS
Lately, a man has been
going around our
neighborhood saying that he
can get people a government
home loan if they pay him
S2OO. We would like to buy a
house. Can this man really
help us?
We cannot warn you too
strongly not to enter into an
agreement of this type
without further information.
Georgia Consumer Services has
had a number of cases in
which someone claimed to
represent such organizations as
the Federal Housing
Authority, and for a fee
ranging from S2OO to SSOO he
could get them a home loan.
Actually, these people had no
connection with any reputable
organization. They merely
took the money and skipped
town.
There is no government
loan agency that sponsors such
people, and you cannot get a
government home loan merely
by paying money to a
middleman.
You should never enter into
any agreement with anyone
unless you have absolute proof
that he represents the
organization that he claims.
Ask for credentials, and call
the organization to verify
them
The most important rule to
remember is: Just because

APPLIANCE CARE
We are about to leave on
vacation. What can I do to
make sure our appliances stay
working while we’re gone?
There are a few, relatively
easy precautions you should
take whenever you are going
to be away from home for
some time.
It’s a good idea to clean all
appliances thoroughly. That
way crumbs and spilled food
will not attract insects, and
your icebox freezer will be less
likely to get too iced over. If
you leave food in your
refrigerator or freezer, it might
be a good idea to have a
neighbor check the power
source every few days to be
sure the food is not thawing.
If you empty these units, leave
the door propped open to
allow air to circulate. (Don’t
do this if you leave pets in the
house for neighbors to feed. If
they got inside and the door
shut they could suffocate.)
Check with your local
utility company to see if you
should make some special
adjustment to pilot lights or
power connections.
Don’t leave any dishes or
clothes in the washers, turn
the water to the clothes

Abdu’l-Baha
according to the words of the Old Testament,
God has said, “Let us make man in our image,
after our likeness.” This indicates that man is of
the image and likeness of God; that is to say, the
perfections of God. The divine virtues are re
flected or revealed in the human reality. Just as
the light and effulgence of the sun when cast upon
a polished mirror are reflected fully, gloriously, so
likewise the qualities and attributes of divinity
are radiated from the depths of a pure human
heart. This is an evidence that man is the most
noble of God’s creatures.
Each kingdom of creation is endowed with its
necessary complement of attributes and powers.
The mineral possesses inherent virtues of its own
kingdom in the scale of existence. The vegetable
possesses the qualities of the mineral plus a virtue
augmentative or power of growth. The animal is
endowed with the virtues of both the mineral and
vegetable plane plus the power of the senses.
The human kingdom is replete with the perfec
tions of all the kingdoms below it, with the addi
tion of powers peculiar to man alone. Man is there
fore superior to all the creatures below him, the
loftiest and most glorious being of creation. Man
is the microcosm, and the infinite universe, the
macrocosm. The mysteries of the greater world, or
macrocosm, are expressed or revealed in the lesser
world, the microcosm. The tree, so to speak, is the
greater world, and the seed in its relation to the
tree is the lesser world. But the whole of the great
tree is potentially latent and hidden in the little
seed. When this seed is planted and cultivated, the
tree is revealed. Likewise, the greater world—the
macrocosm is latent and miniatured in the
lesser world or microcosm of man. This constitutes
the universality or perfection of virtues potential
in mankind. Therefore it is said that man has been
created in the image and likeness of God.
Let us now discover more specifically how he is
the image and likeness of God and what is the
washer off, and leave the
doors ajar.
Remember to have your
newspaper and milk orders
canceled while you are gone,
or when you return, your
appliance may have been

standard or criterion by which he can be measured
and estimated. This standard can be no other than
the divine virtues which are revealed in him.
Therefore, every man imbued with divine qualities,
who reflects heavenly moralities and perfections,
who is the expression of ideal and praiseworthy
attributes, is verily in the image and likeness of
God.
If a man possesses wealth, can we call him an
image and likeness of God? Or is a human honor
and notoriety the criterion of divine nearness?
Can we apply the test of racial color and say that
man of a certain hue white, black, brown, yel
low, red is the true image of his creator? We
must conclude that color is not the standard and
estimate of judgment and that it is of no impor
tance, for color is accidental in nature.
The spirit and intelligence of man is the es
sential; and that is the manifestation of divine
virtues, the merciful bestowals of God, the life
eternal and baptism through the Holy Spirit.
Therefore be it known that color or race is of no
importance. He who is the image and likeness of
God, who is the manifestation of the bestowals of
God, is acceptable at the threshold of God whether
his color be white, black or brown; it matters not.
Man is not man simply because of bodily attri
butes. The standard of divine measure and judg
ment is his intelligence and spirit.
Therefore, let this be the only criterion and esti
mate; for this is the image and likeness of God.
A man’s heart may be pure and white though his
outer skin be black; or his heart be dark and sinful
though his racial color is white. The character and
purity of the heart is of all importance. The heart
illumined by the light of God is nearest and dearest
to God; and inasmuch as God has endowed man
with such favor that he is called the image of God,
this is truly a supreme perfection of attainment,
a divine station which is not to be sacrificed by
the mere accident of color.
