month-long period when the
1971 Major League All-Star
Game balloting will take place.
Official All-Star Ballots will

Millan, Clete Boyer, Orlando
Cepeta and Rico Carty.
Most notable player left off
the ballot is leftfielder Ralph
“Road Runner” Garr, who has
led the Major Leagues in
hitting most of the year.
Garr played most of last
season in the minor leagues but
took over the left field spot for
Atlanta as a result of the
off-season injury to Carty.
Ironically, Carty was left off
the ballot last season but
gained a spot in the All-Star
lineup because 552,382
write-in votes by his fans. He
then went on to win the Major
League batting title with a .366
Mow, Garr appears to
be the prime write-in candidate
in baseball for 1971.
Braves super star Hank
Aaron led all of the voting for
last season’s game with
1,394,847 ballots cast in his
favor.
• The All-Star balloting is

The Official Report from
Georgia's Big League Team
Mike McQueen and former “Miss America” Vonda Kay Van
Dyke. (PRN)
ATLANTA (PRN) - Oh, to
be 20 yegte old, single and
play in W* big leagues. What a
life!
That’s the situation that
young Braves left-handed
pitcher Mike McQueen is in
right now. Two years ago he
was a senior graduating from
Spring Branch High School in
Houston, Texas, and today he
is one of the most promising
young players in the National
League.
“I set a goal for myself
when I signed for the Braves,”
Mike said. “I told my family
that I wanted to be playing in
the Major Leagues in four
years. My chance came a lot
faster than I thought it would.
Here I am now, and I hope to
stay here for a long time to
come.”
Superstar Hank Aaron has
described McQueen as “the
best young Braves lefty I’ve
seen since Warren Spahn,” and
Mike appreciates the
compliment
“I feel that I’ve learned a
tremendous amount in the
year I’ve played for Atlanta,”
Mike continued. “Last season
I was really nervous and a
little bit unsure of myself.
“One game, for instance,
“that I started last year was the
‘NBC Game of the Week’ and
we were playing the Mets in
New York. My knees were
shaking so much before the
game that I could hardly stand
up; and when I got out to the
mound, there were 50,000
Wbple yelling ‘Let’s go Mets’.
“I didn’t have anything on
the ball that day and really got
bombed,” he added. ..
“Now belong
here in he
continued. “I know more
about the batters, and I’m not
scared when I get into a game.
I still get excited, though, each
game I pitch. My hands shake
so much before and after the
game that I can’t even sign an
autograph.”

When Mike was a high
school player in Houston, his
hero was former Astro third
baseman Bob Aspromonte.
“I used to go watch Aspro
play all the time,” Mike said.
“So I could hardly believe it
when I reported to spring
training with the Braves, and
he was traded from Houston
to Atlanta. We became real
good friends.”
McQueen’s friendship with
Aspromonte brought about an
unusual situation the other
night in Atlanta when
Aspromonte, who is now with
the Mets, came to Atlanta to
play against the Braves and
Mike was pitching.
“I had dinner with Bob at
Mike Lum’s house before the
game,” McQueen explained.
“When we were leaving for the
ball park, Bob asked me to
give him at least one hit. I
kidded with him, saying I
would if the situation was
right
“Well, Aspro hit two
homers in the game,” Mike
grinned, “but I was the
winning pitcher. I sent him a
note after the game saying,
‘Don’t ever say I never did
anything for you’.”

There are several exciting
special events coming up in
the next couple of weeks at
Braves home games. One of
the nights that is most fun for
fans each year is Banner Night,
and this year it is scheduled
for the Friday night, June
25th doubleheader with the
Reds. A total of SSOO in cash
prizes will be awarded to the
best banners on display at the
games that night.
Also, Sunday, June 27, will
be Write In Ralph Day with
Ralph Garr Road Runner
license tags for fans who agree
to vote in the Major Leagues
All-Star Game balloting.

Skipjacks Just for Fun
ATLANTA (PRN) - The
foot-long gleaming silver
skipjack herring flashed above
the water in a high leap, then
bored upstream in a slashing
run. Showing amazing strength
for a fish of that size, he
leaped three times and made a
series of swift, vicious runs
before I could pull him along
side, slip the yellow jig from
his mouth and let him fall
back into the water.
This was on my third cast,
and that average held up
pretty well that day. In fact, it
may have been better than
that. An example of why I say
that came a dozen casts later,
when I felt an unusually
strong pull, even for these
frisky rascals. When I brought
the line alongside, I saw
why.. .there were two fish
on. I was fishing a second jig
from a drooper loop, some 15
inches above the one on the
end of my line. In three hours,
I caught perhaps six or eight
“doubles”.
I had been in Columbus to
make a talk, and at the end of
the day Ranger Loy (Mac)
me to take a
whirl at fishing in the
Chattahoochee River.. .he
wanted to show me
something. And he did!
We put the boat in at the
municipal ramp and ran
.upriver about a half mile,
several hundred yards below
the dam right in the middle of
the city. Here, in the swift
water just beside the main
current, we dropped anchor.
Mac tied two quarter-ounce
jigs on his ultralight, and
began casting. I felt
over-equipped, since all I had
with me was rather heavy
tackle. 1 had an open faced
reel and rod good for heavy
freshwater or light saltwater
fishing, and a casting rod and
reel.
Neither outfit really was an
overpowering as I’d thought
they would be, because these
little rascals, ranging from one
to three pounds, put up a

credible fight on •my
gear.. .my arms soon got
tired enough that I was glad to
be able to change types of
tackle, giving each arm a rest.
Mac was having a ball with his
ultralight, but I noticed he laid
his rod down and just watched
several times, for minutes at a
time, and he had plenty of
opportunities to get his fill
Since they’re considered not
edible and so readily caught,
there’s no need to work too
hard for them. They’re strictly
for fun.
Mac told me the skipjacks
start running in late March,
and will keep going well into
June. Several dozen other
anglers were trying their luck
at the same time, most of
them from the shore. Those in
boats had a very definite
advantage, and were catching
many more fish.
The method of fishing was
simple, same as fishing a jig for
other species on a spawning
run. We cast across the
current, let the water wash the
jig down, then retrieved slowly
just off the bottom. I tried a
number of jigs, partly because
I lost several. Yellow worked
fine, so did red, white and
green. The best was a jig with
a white head and a red and
white striped chenile body on
a long shank. I even tried a
wierd-looking dude that has a
green flat head, a green plastic
body about IVj inches long,
with white feelers or legs.
While it didn’t catch as many,
it caught bigger fish.. -
.proving, I guess, that the
bigger ones were more brave.
In three hours I had my
fill.. .my arms ached. I must
have caught and released close
to a hundred fish, and that’s
no fish story. Mac had caught
his share, too. It was a good
sport, and one that should last
because no one keeps these
fish. But their exciting leaps
and vicious runs make it
worthwhile to try them for a
change of pace, and get your
fill of catching fish!
