Aside from the fact that the future morals and culture of any people are mainly dependent on the education of its youth, our public schools are supported by di rect taxation on the people, and hence their management brelines a matter concerning which the hum right to express an opinion Our hoard of school commission ers is one of which any county might justiy feel proud, and it is passing strange why men of such unerring judgment in the control of their in dividual affairs do not remedy to a great extent Lhe many imperfections of the present system. Th-re is one feature connected with it which effectually palsies and makes futile the best efforts of their best teachers. The board is compos ed almosteutilely of men who have once made pedagogism their vocation and they will readily assent to ih proposition that a teacher with forty or fifty pupils, and half this number irregular attendants, or “day schol ars” ;ia they are called, soon findsiiis classes so torn to peices and so liu- m-rous, his order and di-eipline so demoralized—everything in such chaos and confusion that he can ac complish liteiviy nothing.
