The examination of applicants for scholarships in the Peabody Normal school from this county has been placed in the bauds of Mr. J. C. Harris. Applicants must take notice that examination papers must be in the hand’s of Prof. Orr by the 20th, else they will pass unnoticed. A scholarship at this school offers better advantages than any in the Sonth, and we hope that at hast one of our aspiring youths will be suc cessful. The Hoit c Penitentiary Committee. The Hons. Messrs. Wilson, Liv ingston, McWhorter, Lang, and Williams, members of the House Penitentiary committee who visited- the convict camp at this place last week, spoke in the highest terms of the management of Captain Eaves, and his assistant, Mr. Waddy. The camp is as neat as a pin—and the convicts well fed and cured for. The five members of the commit tee, representing as many sections of the State, expressed themselves in the highest terms of praise of our people and towu—and pr-dicted for it a very rapid increase iu popula tion and importance. Jumped the Town. Last week G. W. Burge and G. N. Flemming, brick masons engaged on the Cedartown ivaie-house, ‘struck’ for higher wages. The building committee were unable to see it in that light, and employed other work men. Burge and Flemming then left, which would have been all right but for the fact that they left numerous little hills amounting to about one hundred dollars unsettled. Messrs. J. A. Wvnn and Boh Hutcherson went in pursuit—put old Tige An derson, chief of Atlanta police, on the track, and in three hours had Ifdoe., to perfection ^ gentl| yft en limbo. Messrs. York, jalylO l 21 The ami so are Cedartown merchants, as clever as they are, when they are swindled. Our Business Outloot. The growing importance of Cedar- town is being felt hy all who think at all. Our town is full of str ingers, many of whom desire to locate. That the place is growing in a busi ness sense, one has only to notice the in.provenveuls just made, and . those under contract and nearing completion. Besides the elegant, Lrge brick estahlisliBaenis of Huntington & Wright, Bradford & Walker and J. S. Stubbs & Co, which are now oc cupied and doing a large business, numerous others are under way, un der contract or nearly completed. Messrs. Philpot & Dodds will move : into their new house in ten days. Messrs. Barr -i L*ak, recently with David II. Dougherty of Atlanta, will occupy the new store of A. R. Jones, next door to Philpot & Doods, and hope to open by the loth inst. A large part of their stock is already here. These new stores are coyer, d with slate taken from the quarries near Rockmart in onr own county, (and which are operated by Messrs. Ellis Davis & Co.) and present a very neat appearance. We wonder that all onr people who have houses to build, do not use slate-coverings. It is durable, does not rot or leak, an-1 is fi re.proof. Messrs. J. A. Wynn & Bro., T. F. Burbank, Jud Crubb, J. C. Allen, A. Dougherty. L. S. & D. H. Led better, It - M. Hutcherson & Co, It. T. Harrison, J. M. Morris, Gus Adams, and Miilar A Wright have let out contracts for buildings on Main street* which, when com pleted, will give to, the street a city air. All of the recently fiuished houses are of brick, and all ander contract will he of brick, and all coven d with slate, or tin or iron. Add to these the houses of Messrs. Phillips & Co., J. S. Noyes, G. W. Featherston & Co, Richard Gam mon, H. A. Stoffrngen, Cherokee Iron Go’s store, and E. A. Tate, and some idea may be had of the amount of the business done iu the town. Last year, the cotton receipts were about six thousand bales. It is rea sonable to suppose that, wiji the complvtvn. of the Cherokee Rail road to this point, the receipts will reach at hast ten thousand bales this year. Much of the cotton winch lias heretofore gone directly lo Rome, will stop here. Why? Our cotton buyers pay Rome prices ami sell goods as cheap as Rome can. They pay from one.half to three-fourths more for cotton than Cartersville buyers do, and sell goods from five to ten per cent, cheaper. So that ilie, a..!Ion made around Euli rhe, S iirsboro’, Taylorsville and Rock- mart will c me l-eie. We undi-r- s'and that Mr. West, President of tho Cherokee Iron and Railroad Company, will bring all the cotton along his road to Cedartown free ol charge. A la r ge brick warehouse, with fire-proof iron roif, is rapidly near ing completion, and will be ready for Ihe present crop. Cotton will be stored at less price than is charged at Rome. Our mer hunts are in' earnest in their efTor s to build up onr town. They are clever, accom nrodating and full of energy. We ask our Haralson and Carroll coun ty friends, and our neighbors over the line in Alabama, and all along the line of the Cherokee Railroad to come and try this market, and our w«rd for it, they will be satitfied. Besides husines houses, quite number of private residences are going up. We understand that there is soon to be erected, a large hotel, convenient to the business part of town, with all the modern improve ments. ROCKMART .LOCALS. Fodder-pulling is going on rapid ly. The weather has been fine for the business. Cotton is opening rapidly, hut there Is great complaint of the sta ple being cut short by the early maturity of the weed. The merchants here are preparing for cotton. They are receiving large lots of bagging and ties. The Cherokee Railroad is doing business now with a vim. Long 1 trains of frieght leave here daily. The fatal disease that has been raging in our vicinity for some time is uow abating. No new case re cently, and some of those on hand are getting well. Two brothers, Clark and Adolphus White, near Yorkville in Paulding county, died recently with that fatal disease, and several more cases re ported these and in the vicinity of Draketown. Another steam saw mill going np in pine belt contiguous to railroad, by Phillips and Henderson. Twogovernmentstill houses going up near this place, on the place for merly owned hy L. B. York. W. B. S. Davis has sold his farm and mills to W. T. Simpson. Davie speaks of moving to Texas. He starts soon to look at the country. There has been quite a revival of religion going on for some time at Taylorsville. A great many acces sions to the church. There has been also one going on a<) Yorkville with good results. Rev. Mr. Owings, a Baptist min ister, preached the funeral of Mrs. Muhol Sherrill last Sunday in Au gust to a crowded congregation. The merchants are filling up their houses with goods preparatory for an extensive trade this fall, and I think they would, get it if they would only advertise. The young men are pushing a vigorous campaign, toward a matri monial battft, and the girls are stand ing firm against all their attacks, but we think they will yield soon as report says some weddings are to conic oft’ soon* The readers of the Advertiser were very much disappointed in not finding the second week present ments of our grand jiiry in it. The county papers heretofore have al ways published them, and glad of the chance; and we ain’t see why they should be refused now, as th y are only an item of news. A year of sunshiny happiness, of lavish, unbounded parental love and jov, of twining, responsive affeciion, of budding promise and hope follow ed by a few sad, gloomy, dreary weeks of pair, and suffering and doubt and anguish aud cold, haden, comfortless despiir, and her little life’s history is told. So perfect in her sweetness that the most doting affection could suggest no change, so patient in her sufferings as to he an example to age, she leaves us stunned, benummed,al most overwhelmed by that deep, un utterable woe which none can under stand save those who have known it. On or about the 15th of Scptem-1 It nlavs Hjpai Tunes, Quadrilles, her, we shall issue the Semi-Weekly Waitzes, Opejatic Selection, or Popu- Dispatch. Since starting the Daily- Dispatch we have had many inquiries as to when we would start the week ly. Our reason for post )mning its issue was that we wanted first to get the Daily thoroughly introduced be fore undertaking anything else. Our daily is now well belore the people. We have published it now for nearly three months, and are satisfied that The Dispatch fills to some extent the “long felt want.” There -is a want, however, that is as yet unsupplied and we propose to meet this with the Semi-Weekly Dispatch. In these days of telegraph, fast trains and daily and double-daily mails, the peo ple want the news before it is a week old. An examination of the Postal Reg ulations ard mail routes will show that there are comparatively few post- offices in Georgia and adjacent States that do not have at least two mails a week, and there is no reason why the people living in this territory should not be supplied with a newspaper twice a week, The Semi-Weekly Dispatch will be issued ou Tuesday and Friday of each week, and will be filled with the cream of the news of the half of the week- It will be the size of the dai ly, but being issued twice a week, will give as much if not more read ing matter than any other weekly paper in Georgia. Adhering to our rule that newspapers should be put on a basis with everything else, we shall put our Semi-Weekly at the ve ry low price of two dollars a year. Subscriptions can be sent in at once.
