Powell of <his place took up a stray mule that had been abandon ed by a stranger the night before. The behavior of the party who hi d the mule and his failure to return and claim it leads Mr. Powell to be lieve that the mule is stolen property. One of the si blest (baths that have osenred in this community for years was that of Miss Emma Hen- fay, last Sunday morning Young, beautiful, amiable and accomplished, as a friend a daughter and a devout christain she was the peer of the best, a joy and comfort to her family and a favorite with all who knew her. She had been slightly indisposed for some two or three weeks but her case was not thonght to be dangerous un til within a few hours ot her death. She was abont eighteen years of age. Betarned. Mesrs. Weather exceedingly dry, Btopped farming, and cold nights and hot days. Beautiful weather for gathering cotton. Mr. W. S. Allcorn brought in the first bale of cotton for this season, last Tuesday, and sold to Whitehead, Jones A Co. for 11 cents. The sorghnm mills are running in onr land. Candy stretching will dow soon start. A negro man working for George F. Magan commenced to grease the ftoggs of his cane mill with his fin gers, and now he has one less to grease with. Misses MuhuL Webb, anil Carrah Waits are holh getting most well from the late spell of fever. Next year i3 hap year, but from indications one would be led to think that leap year was now on Inn! We suppose they are only practicing now, to get their Lauds in by the time it arrives. Married, on the 12th instant, at the residence of W. N. Strange, E=q. by W. N. Strange. N. Mr. Robbins, had a several days meeting at Van Wert, commencing on the 11th and closing on the lfith instant. Wt were entertained by several very in teresting discourses by Rev. Mr. Robbins, a yonng man that promises to be an ornament to himself and to his church. Last Saturday was a drinking whisky day, we suppose, by the many staggering around. Our new mar shal, Dock Satterfield, had about a.- much as he could say grace over, but he proved himself sufficient foi the emergency. We learn that Capt. West will pro bably soon build a stone depot in the Pnblic square at this place which will be quite an ornament to the place. Mr. W. C. Stovall, onr efficient Postmaster, has moved the postoffice to the opposite side of the Pnblic square into the Rockmart hotel bnilding, which is mnch more suita ble for the bnsiness. Rev, S. P. Richardson preached last night at Van Wert on his way to Yorkville to his quarterly meeting. Mr. Thompson York, son of L. P, York, and Miss Sallie Brcwa were married last Saturday night. Miss Sallie Piwell, who has been visiting relatives and friends at this place, returned home to Taylorsville yesterday, and what a scene there was at the starting of the train by the yonng men. Such a wiping of eyes and ringing of noses never were seen. We suppose some of them boohooed when they got off to themselves. There is some tal c of fencing up a part of Rockmart and making corn on it next year. A Centenarian. Mrs. Surah Strickland, the grand mother of Mrs. G. W. Jones of this place, was one hnndred years old the 16th instant. She is nearly blind and very feeble; can onl y walk around in the house, but can talk nearly as strong as ever. She is the sister of Mr. Samuel Hilbern, who is now alive and stoat, and ninety-four years old. W. N. Strange. CHEAP GOODS.
