The following letter which was crowded out of our last issue by the unexpectedly large number of Sheriffs advertisemeuts, was written to ns about two weeks since, by a stndent of Mercer University, a young man of whom our couuty will some day be proud. Mr. Editor. If you will indulge me I will write you some observa tions which I made of the proceed ings of the State Fair during the most important portion of the week, I visited the fair grounds for the first time on Wednesday evening and in passing through the large gate in to the Park, with a longing desire to see everything of interest on exhibi tion, I regret to say .that- the first thing I observed was-gambling car ried on in various ways am] in ever-- corner. On entering the Floral in. 1 however, andexamining .the various and beautiful fiowets Spread out-be fore me and isteutng to.-the sweet, melting strains of mysi'c’Svhicli flow- •■(1 from the trial instruments ou ex. hibitim insensibly my..mind wan dered away from the unholy sigh', which greeted me on mj* first enter ing the Park. After examining this department for some time,' I passed to the next story; I .there saw many things ol interest, amohg which were 3ome curious stones, relics of the In dian and some unknown and forgot- ron race, and a manuscript book written ages ago and handed down from generation to generation. Iu this department I also iuund many articles the handiwork of .adies v. hie evidently cost many hours of weari ness and toil. The art gallery which was on the third and last story of the building I first enter'd, was tilled with a crowd gazing, delighted and pleased, upon me beautiful pictures, many ot which were doubtless the work or at least the conceptions of some ol tli • masters. I went through the Agricultural department with greut*ph*asure and foundjthere various products of the earth besides many sptcim> us of carriages, buggies ami wagons. It is a joylul thought to think that the country is advancing in any great enterprise. For this reason 1 was glad to See on exhibition much fine stock, a goodly nunilier of blooded Cows and horses. But the re, is still room for improvement aud I hope the good work will go on-as the years glide by. On Thursday the Fair grounds were crowded with people from al most every point in the State, and this was considered the grandest day of the Fair. The Buffalo chase, re peated on Friday, ami the teat per- lormed by the Mexican rider, who rode twenty miles in forty nine min utes and sixteen seconts, making thirty six mounts aud dismounts were the main features uf the rue ing. The most affecting scene duriiq the Fair wis the uuv. iltug of the s >1 doifa monument accompanied by an eloquent address from 11 <n. Thomas Hardeman dedicating the monument iu the purpose lor which ii was ere 3- ted. Yours truly, Mercer, ISAAC T. MEE, Dealer in Tin, Stoves, Hard ware and HoLLW-WAREofall kinds. The ni'-ssnge is destitute of any great <>r important snggesti n on any subject, whatever, and which mainly tattles about getting more money for one thing or another, un der one pretext or another, out of the country. Philadelphia Times. The message is commonplace, even to stupidity, aud fully one third of it is made up of incincere and bor rowed platitudes on n:v:l service re form. There is not to be found in it a single original suggestion or a parngaph that displays the qualities of the statesman. Stephens’ love fur Grant is not of recent date. When he was throttling liberty in Louisiana with the bayo net, Alex, said he was right. Now, to Bay nothing of the baseness of the sto<>p-to-conquer poilicy, its folly is apparent iu the light of past events. In pursuance of a sickly sentiment ality to appease the North we nomi nated Horace Greeley, the’ father of Radicalism, and what good did itdo? It brought, ns no more Northern sup. port, and broke the back of Democ racy for many years. And will it be any better with Grant? Sacrificing principle never does auy good.—Or augebury ( S. C.) Times. Governor Colquitt has discharged the duties of the Chief Executive of the State, with fidelity and ability. He has been surrounded with fraud and corruption on every side, yet lie has passed the fiery ordeal of the recent investigations, without a stain upon his character as a man, or a reproach as an official.—Carnesville Register.
