Last Sunday Euharlee was full and running over with water. The larg est freshet for years. On the 11th Wm Mathis, col, got his arm Caught in Mr. Bobo’s gin which tore all the 8e.h from his arm and elbow; ar.d on the same night little Tubu H.-bbs, 16 years of age, who was running the engine, it is supposed, after the gin had stopped ginning, had started again for the purpose of putnpping water, and in attempting to thr w off the band from the gin got caught in the band which wound one of his legs to the shuft and carried him around the shaft for probably an hour. He w::s found|nextinoruiiige r ddlethesbaf with nothing but his shoes and socks: on, his legs broke and his whole body, arms and head bruised in an awful manner, dead. A great calamity for hi • poor mother and invalid sister, as he was their main support. The family have our i:u bon titled sympa thy aud condolence iu their affliction. Every one said John was a good boy. Business has fallen off some since the fall in cotton. The cotton buy ers here have bought over 1,100 bales this season. It still conies. Two mnrriages this week, and the prospect for more soon. Last Monday was Justice Court day. Several cases wore disposed of and several more on docket. A good blacksmith and a good school teacher could do good business here now. Judge W. C. Barber and wife have been on a visit to their plantation in Mississippi for some time and have not returned yet. Rev. J. R. Smith, the Circuit Rider for this circuit, has moved into the parsonage, and we think will give f ood satisfaction to the church here, [e preached here last Sunday. We came down to town the other morning and found W. A. J. White- head in the best humor and he ap peared to be very happy. On enquir ing the cause his extreme happinese, was informed that a little daughter, a few honrs old, was the canse. Cotton pickings are very fashiona ble now. One nearly every day. Two new engines on the Cherokee Railroad this morning. OapL West is preparing for a good business on his road, and we think he will get it. George Freeman and Ida Black- well were married last Thursday night, and James A. Watters and Mary Jane Hudgins last night, W. N. Strange, N. P, and J. P., officiat ing. Onr people are preparing to get up a Christmas tree Wednesday night, and it promises a success. John S. Davidson and L. Bolling were married last Tuesday, R. W. W. Simpson officiating.
