they are intended.

We venture the assertion that Ce.
dartown is “drummed” as completely
as any place in the conn try. But
then thnt is not a bad sign.
Grumblers at the weather who
have been wishing for a change
have doubtless had their wishes fullv
gratified in the recent disagreeable
spell.
The very sudden change in the
weather firom mild to eevere has
caused many to kill hogs who were
afraid to do their slaying during the
last cool spell.
Clark Duffey, who has for some
time past been with his brother J. P.
Duffey in the harness business iu
this place, left last Saturday for Cum-
ming, Forsyth county.
Si Valentine’s day is a week from
next Saturday. As this is leap year we
hope tka youcg ladies will see that
the yonng gentlemen are all supplied
with missives tender and sublime.
Judge Snlow has had erected in
front of the Cedartown Hotel a large
bell, the gladdening peals of which are
intended to summon his guests to
tbeir meals, and it is said to be quite
a success.
Toaccommodate the growing busi
ness at the post office, quite a num
ber of new boxes have been added.
Our efficient P. M. seems to have at
all times an eye to the needs of the
public. He may iu truth be called
a popular Knight of the letter box.
Mr. W. C. Baker, of the firm of
Baker A Hall, left tile city yesterday
"for Oeilartown, where- lie goes to open
a branch house o! iliat tirin. Th^
people of Cedaftown will And Mr.
B-ker a progressive ami fair-dealing
gentleman and they will lose nothing
by giving him a cordial welcome
amongst them.—Cartersville Ex
press.
We call attention to the card of
Mr. B. Fisher, watchmaker and jew
eler, who will be found at. the store
of A. D. Hogg A Co., ready to do
work, in his line for those wishing
it. Mr. Fisher comes from Barues-
ville to our place, and is an excellent
workman and a clever gentleman.
We hope he may receive a liberal
patronage from the public.
In a few days Judge Underwood
and Solicitor Clements will be on
hand to be heard in behalf of law
and justice, and the evil-doers may
look out; but to the credit of the peo
ple of our county it may be said,
there are few law-breakers in our
bounds, and our Superior Court,
which opens Monday next, is noi
likely to be overrun with criminal
business.
We learn the town Council have
ordered and will receive this week six
more street lamps that will be pat up
in the placet where they are now
most needed. These, added to those
already up, will give our town suf
ficient light, and perambulators after
night can go our s reets without fear
of sousing • foot into some unsus
pecting mudhole. Truly, we pro
gress.
A fellow who ought to soon be
come distinguished for his ignorance
stood on the corner of the street the
other day and observed among a dray
load of goods being brought from
the railroad a large lot of tin guano
distributors, and thinking he com
prehended very readily the use they
were put to, remarked, “Well I’m
swamped if them ain’t the longest
molasses funnels that I ever saw.
The Boss Coffee Pot, for which
Messrs. Philpot A Dodds are agents,
is one of the most useful inventions,
lately put before the country. For
making good coffee quickly it is said
to excel anything yet known, while
in its use there is found to be an im
mense saving. We have the words
of those who have tried it, and
give it the very highest recommen
dations. Every family should have
one.
The election for marshal and depu
ty marshal for the town of Cedar-
town for the year 1880 took place at
the meeting of Council on Tuesday
night last, and resulted in the re-
election of the faithful officers of
the past year, George S. Whitfield
and John W. Powell. They have
been always faithful in the discharge
of their duties, and their re-election
will meet the approbation of the law-
abiding public.
There is an old lady now living
In Cedartown, whose vitality, at her
age, is sorpething remarkable. Slit
ia seventy-one years old, and only a
few days ago took up her knitting,
started at nine o’clock in the morn
ing and walked to her daughter’s,
eight miles in the country, with
whom she took dinner, and chat
ting an hour or so, returned home in
the afternoon and cooked supper for
four persons. Now, if anybody
knows an old lady who can beat this
let them trot her out
A few nights agoagentlessan who
had his horse tied in the lot belong
ing to the stable of Wright k John
son was crossing the vacant space be
tween the lot and Main street and
it being unusually dark, he stumbled
and tell into the large bole that was
dug for a cellar and left uncovered.
The bale being nearly tec feet deep,
the tumble was a rather hefty one.
The gentleman not comprehending
the Iritnation, and fearing to move
lest he shonld find a deeper place,
did probably the best thing to be
done under the circumstances, hal
loed rather manfully until a pi'ot
arrived who kindly assisted him to-
regain terra firma. The hole ought
to be covered or fenced in, as this is
the second occurrence of this kind,
we learn.
At Ihe heuse of Mr. L. G. .Ray,
in this place, on Saturday night last,
died, Robert Lee. Lee was sent to
this place from Whitfield county
hat April. Having beea ounvicted
in the SnperiorConrt of that coun
ty, of stealing a horse and boggy,
and sentenced to the chain-gang, he
was sent to the squad of convicts
under Mr. Eve, at this place. Short
ly after his arrival he became trou
bled a great deal by the breaking out
of old wounds which he had re
ceived in the war, and being*unable
to endure the labors of a convict,
was, through the efforts of Mr.
Eve and Gen. Phillips, granted a
pardon by Governor Colquitt Lee
persistently denied committing the
crime of which he was convicted,
and stated that he hired the bnggy
and horse and having unavoidably
to stay over the time iu which he
was to return, was taken up on the
charge of theft. We have no know
ledge of the facts, but this is Lee’s
statement He has had a hard time,
having to enduie untold suffering,
the physicians being able to ren
der him but lii tie assistance. During
his trialshis wife bus been constantly
wi'h him.
Valuable Addition to the Boslness of
Cedartmvn.
We were p'eased to meet in Ced'.ir-
t.own one day last week Mr. William
Herring, from the firm of Inman,
Swann & Co., of New York and At-
anta, who came upon invitation to
our place for the purpose of ascer
taining what kind <>f inducements
here were here for the opening of a
cotton commission, banking and
co.lecting nsiness, and we are glad
to learn that the prospects so favor
ably impressed him that Jie has de
cided to com*. We learn, also,
ther is a probability that hs wili
erect a nice building for his business
on some of our vacant lots. He
will do a large cotton business in the
cotton season, buying and shipping
direct. It is with great pleasure we
note this contemplated acquisition
to the rapidly widening business of
Cedartown.
Alarm of Fire,
On Friday morning last an alarm
of fire was sounded on toe streets,
and a considerable crowd was soon
gathered about the buiUing iu which
Prof. J. C. Harris is teaching school,
where smoke was seen CMuing from
its roof. Quite an excitement was
created among the students who h -d
observed the fire catching arouud
the stove flue in the ceiling, and began
to empty the house of its contents,
carrying desks, books, etc, into the
streets. A number of persons were
soon on the roof, and cutting sway
the timbers around the flue, applied
a few buckets ol water which extin
guished the flames that were gain
ing some headway iu the ceiling.
Our people have had such an unplea
sant experience with conflagrations
that they are apt to be vigilant aud
active in subduing a fire, if they
can reach it iu its infancy.

Tribute of Bespeet.
September 18th, 1879, at his res
idence in Haralson county, Ga,
Rev. Elias M. Head departed this
life, aged 58 years and 8 mouths.
He was born in Oconee county,
North Carolina, on the 23nl day of
Janaary, 1821, and became a mem
ber of the Baptist church at 11
years of age, and commenced preach
ing at 18 years of age.
The committee appointed by Bac-
hanan lodge, No. , of which
brother Head was a member, offer
the following for adoption ; |
Whereas, no church or Maaonic
fraternity, however so well fortified
it may be, it safe from that great
euemy, Death. He has again visited
our church, lodge and family and
deprived it of on* of its members,
one who was ever ready to lend his
assistance in time of need. He was
ever an affectionate husband and
father, and 40 years of his life a
faithful minister of the gospel. He
died ia the fnH possession of his
faculties, nod in peace with God and
man, and in fall hope of n blessed
immortality beyond the grave. It is
a painful aud solemn task for ns to
bury onr friends out of sight, bat
when they leave with us assurances
that they have exchang’d a world
of sorrow and suffering for the
home of the just, it should fully
and candidly reconeile ns to the
will of Him who does according to
His will in the army of Heaven and
amongst the inhabitants of the earth,
and at the same time prompt us to
such a life of preparation at will in
sure us n re-union in Heaven with
the redeemed, who are not lost but
lave only gone before. The com
mittee offer the following reSoluti' n:
Resolved, That in the death of
brother Head we have lost an esti
mable and naeful member of the
church, the family a kind hus
band and father, and the commnnitv
an ornament to society.
Resolved, That the brethren repair
to the reaidenoa and take the body
ia procession to the place of inter*
ment and there Mason ic-Jly deposit
it.
Resolved, That the lodge be draped
in mourning, and the brethren wear
the usual badge thirty days.
Resolved, That while we mourn
the loss of our beloved brother, we
bow with submission to the dispen
sation of Divine pow -r, and pray
God to sanctify it to our good ; that
we also tender our heart-felt sympa
thy to the bereaved family, and com
mend it to Him who promises to be
a friend iu time of distress and sup
plication.
Resolved, That iu this afflictive
dispensation of God's provi fence
we mourn our loss, but rejoice in the
eternal gain of our beloved brother;
that we miss his presence in our
lodge, while now his freed spirit en*
gages with the saints and angels in
the Celestial lodge above in purer,
nobler songs of praise than mortal
tongue can utter; tint a copy of
this minute be spread upon the Ma
sonic record, and a copy be furnished
the family; also a copy be sent to
the Cedartown Advertiser and the
Christian Index for publicatiou.
