Why fs It r
That hogs are allowed to run loose
in the streets ?
That the Oedartown] band, don’t
awake from its lethargy and favor the
community with some music ?
That so few people seem ready to
sacrifice themselves upon theircoun
try’s altar by becoming candidates?
That, of the many who go out
fishiog on the creek so lew return
with anything to show for their
pains?
That some men will borrow tbc-ir
neighbors’ newspapers when they can
so cheaply provide one for ihem-
selves ?
That so many men in the world
find time to attend to ether people f
business while their own is so sadly
neglected ?
That while it takes the moon two
weeks to get full, some men cau ac-
compl sli the same job in the course
of ail afternoon?
That some people neglect to re
move filth from their premises when
it endangers their health as well as
that of their neighbors?
That men with large muscle and
little sense will go all over theccuu-
try selling patent-rights when they
would make such acceptable field
hands?
That some man with the means
don’t erect some nice little tenemeut
bouses iu Cedartown, when it is well
known what a fine interest could be
realized^upon the outlay ?
That men will spout politics and
talk about constitute ual govern
ment and States rights who don’t
know in what year the declaration
of independence was framed ?
That negroes prefer to live in idle
ness and want about town, when
there is plenty of work for them on
the farms at from eighty cents to’ a
dollar and a quarter per day ?
That some fellow don’t invent a
double-breasted, back-action, water

legacy to the people of Cedartown,

Letter from Rochester, Sew Fork.
Rochester, June 26,1880.
Mr. Editor: I have just read
your last issue and feel prompted to
send you a letter for insertion. II
you like you may stop year ears
while I say to your patrons, a mat
ter they have already found out, that
yuu aie making your paper a good
one. May you go on to excel.
I continue to feel a hearty interest
in the welfare of Cedar Valley. Eve
ry one, without exception, I hold as
a friend and brother. God bless
them all. If the same enterprise
that now distinguishes the public-
spirited ci’izeus of Cedartown, con
tinues into the future, their success
will be permanent.
I am truly gratified to see that
your spiritual is keeping pace with
your material prosperity. That is a
magnificent example of our, Metho
dist brethren offering 8925 for a dis
trict parsonage. Hurrah for them
It also gives me much pleasure that
the Baptists have at last awakened
Irom their “Rip Van Winkle” slum
bers (excuse me) and have determin
ed to “rise and build” for their pas
tor. The only us? Christians have for
this world’s goods is, to consecrate
‘ them all to the Master’s use. “Wheth
er we live or die we are the Lord’s.”
It will eertainly be gratifying to
Prof. Harris to know that members
of his flock writing to me say “he is
mighty clever, and is pleasing every
body.” I don’t imagine this renders
him liable to the condemnation of
hat Scripture which says; “FVoe
unto you when all men shall speak
well of you.”
Wheat prospers so finely in Bro.
Myrick’s parsonage, I take it as a
hint what a fine investment a parson
age is. I am quite sure there would
he more wheat in Georgia it more
should be planted in church grounds.
“It may chance of wheat or of some-
other grain.”
In the midst of all my rejoicings
I am saddened to think how many
death has removed from Cedar
Valley within a few short years.
Soon the old and middle aged shall
have been taken away, and the little
boys and girls that now walk the
streets, shall stand in their places.
“Truly life is as a shadow.” “We
spend our years as a tale that is told.
Happy the man who, when he fails
here, shall be received into everlast
ing habitations. I ant now thinking
of many lying in the silent grave
yard wiio were alive when I went to
C dartown five years ago and more :
Capt. Neal, Maj. Walthall, Maj.
West, Dr. Richardson, Deacon
Whitehead, and “Bro” Hogg and
others—how the names accumulate
as I recall them.
But turn me now from these sad
thoughts to the delightful summer
of this, the i “Flour City,” of Wes
tern New York.
Cool, shady, and inviting'to repose
as the parks and streets are, amidst
playing fountains, and i looming
flowers, yon may let your
“llamraock’swins loose to the spirt of the wind
While visions of happiness dance over yonr mind”
you may sleep if you may, while the
huckster, daily hawking fruit about
the streets, is crying “strawberries!”
“goodberries!” How various are the
avocations of men.
Than be some big, strong, nan with
great, long, whiskers, going through
the streets day by day with awheel
barrow and a fish trumpet, or, with
lusty lungs shouting into every
home, “Irish potatoes!’ “strawtei
rie=!” “cherries!” I would rather be
a dog and bag the moon. The Demo
cratic parry seem to be on the eve of
an “abundant entrance” into the
White House. The Republican pa
pers of Rochester fairly admit that
they will be beaten in the coming
election. Torchlight "recession, and
fireworks last evening, set the city
ablaze. Let the good work go on.
May such a cloud of wi. nesses rise
for Hancock and English that shall
overwhelm “Radicalism” and estab
lish constitutional government upon
enduring foundations.
Yours Truly,
C. K. Henderson.
of “Yankee- Doodle.” Rough and .
hearty cheers followed, and in a ran- !
ment scores of men were seen shak- ;
ing hands with their quondam' foe3. i
The scene will not soon be forgotten ;
by those who saw it, and will be long yV J,
talked of as a notable incident of the
Democratic Convention of 1880.
The rasping voice of the reading
clerk and the thump of the gavel
recalled attention to tlic interests of
the day.

How Watches Ara made.
It wi 11 he apparent to any one
who will examine a Solid Gold
Watch, that aside from the nocessa-
thicknnss for engraving and pop
ishing, a large proportion of the pre
cious metal used, is needed only to
stiffen and holu the engraved por
tions in place, and supply the neces
sary solidity and strength. The sur
plus gold is actually needless so fu
ns utility and beauty are concerned.
In James Boss’ Patent Go'd Watch
Cases, this waste of precious metal
is overcome, and th? same solidity
and strength produced at from
one-third to one half of the usual
cost of solid cases. This process is
ol the most simple nature, as !?]_
lows: a plate of nickie composition
metal, especially adapted to the. pur
pose, has two plates ol solid gold
soldered oue on each side. The tar-.-e
are then passed between polished
ateel rollers, and the result is a str-.p
of heavy plated composition, from
which the cases, oacks, centres, b- z
e!s, Ac., are cut and shaped by suita
ble dies and formers. The gold in
these cases is sufficiently thick to
admit of all kinds of ciiastng, en
graving enamelling; the engraved
cases have been carried u itil worn
perfectly smooth by time and tis-
without removing th? gold-
This is the only case made with
plates of solid cold and icar/ante l by

To relieve the aching heart of wo

of the womb, to which woman is

Glad Tidings to Kald-hcadcd Men.
The other day Mr. M. Dessing^ of Pe-
trolia, Pa., stepped into McClarran’s Phar
macy, on the corner of Sixth Avenue and
Smithfield street, Pittsburg, and purchased
a bottle of Carboline. While there he ex
hibited the top of his head, which bore evi
dence of once being bald, but. which at
present, from the use of Carboline, as he
states, is completely covered with a strong
crop of new hair, full}* one inch long. Prac
tical tests of this wonderful hair restorer
are being made daily, and its remarkable
virtues found to far exceed anything ever
before introduced. It has been demon
strated that Carboline does work great
wonders in giving the bald head a luxur
iant growth of hair. It is sold by all drug
gists.
