Question fur Council. *
Cedartown ought not to be longer
without a hog ordinance. • The la
zy gruuters that stay about the
streets create - more filth and fleas
during summer than a large and
well organized corps of scavengers
could abaie or remove. This ques
tion is worthy of consideration by
our able board of Councilmen. No
body blames those who own hogs
running on the streets when no or
dinance prevents it—for one has the
same right in the premises that an
other lias—but we believe if an or
dinance were enacted and enforced,
preventing their running at large in
town, all would soon see and ac
knowledge the wisdom of the act.
What say these gentlemen ?
Robert Bjers.
[Danville (Ky.) Advocate.]
Died, at Danville Junction, on
the 20th ult. Bobt. T. Byers, in the
20th year of his age, the result of an
accident on the C. S. R. W., near
Glenn Mary, Tenn. Though Rob
ert’s death has already been an
nounced through these columns, we
feel constrained to pay a tribute to
the memory of those noble and
manly qualities that characterized
him in life. With a high sense of
honor, a generous and magnanimous
disposition, the only son of a devo
ted mother, his death has caused a
void not easily filled. The ways of
Providence seem dark and mysteri
ous; and while sorrow fills our hearts,
we bow in humble submission to the
will of ‘Him whodoeth all things
well.’ Sorrow and grief now fill the
home of which he was once the
pride; hut to the sorrowing parents

Grand Jnry Presentments.
We the grand jpy, chosen and
sworn for the second week August
term, Superior Covrt ol Polk couuty
submit the following presentments.
We have through a committee ex
amined the jail, aud find it well Sept,
ar.d the comfort of the prisoners, as
well as their safety, properly looked
after; and we commend the jailer for
faithfulness in the discharge of his
duties. We earnestly urge the abso
lute uecesity of bulding a kitchen to
be detached from the jail, as the
room now used for that purpose en
dangers the safety of the building;
and we recommend, that the fire
place in the room now used as a cook
room, be.closed up. The docket of D.
N. Hampton, justice of the peace, was
examined and found to be neatly ami
correctly kept.
We find that the tax collector lias
been collecting thirty cents for set
tling each tax fi fa, when settlement
was made before levy, and we do
hereby condemn such action as being
without the authority of law. And
we lecomm ud for the benefit of tax
payers, that the tax collector do not
issue execution against tax payers,
before the 20th day of November
uext, for the taxes due the present
year.
We approve the reconimeiidatious
of last week’s grand jury on the sub
j net of roads; but we desire to cali
the attention of the road commis
sioners of the county loth - impor
tance and necessity of working all
the mads in the county now, and
not wait until winter, when the roads
will be unpassable, and when they
cannot be worked to ad van* age.
We have discussed t he quest ion of
“public schools,’’ and while there aiv
complaints against the board of ed
ucation, we are satisfied, with tin-
lights before us, that these com
plaints are largely groundless. To
settle the public mind, howevei, •>.
this subject, we respectfully request
the board of education to publish at
as early a date as practicable, the
amounts received for the public
school, stheamount3jpaid out and such
other matter? connected with the
workings of said boarl', as will be of
interest to the people of the county.
Shouldit befonnd necessary to hold
another week for this term of the
court, we would request his honor
Judge Underwood, if consistent with
law, not to empannel a grand jury
for the next week.
If it can be done, we request that
our member t> the Legislature en
deavor to have the law s) modified
that a grand jury shall be empaunel-
ed for only one week at eacii term of
the court in this county
We recommend that bailiffs in a -
tenaance on the court be allowed one
dollar per day for such service. We
have examined the accjuni; ot th ■
sheriff, and recommend that he be
paid as follows :
For summoning two juries.. .810.00
“ 107 witnesses before
grand jury.... 15.00
wailing on court two w eks 22.00
We extend to his Hon. Judge Un
derwood, Solicitor G«:i rat Clem n s,
acting Solicitor General O il. E. N.
Broyles and Col. Ivy F. Tlio npson,
our thanks for courtesies to our b oly.
We recommend that these present
ments be published in the Ce lartowu

y ihickn-ss for engraving and pol
ishing, a large proportion of the pre-
cj.iiis metal ust-d, is needed only to
stiffen and Lola the engraved por
tions in place, and supply the neces
sary solidity and strength. Thesur-
plu8 gold is actually needless so far
as UTILITY and in-anty are concerned:
In James Boss’ Patent Go'll Watch
Gases, i his waste of precious metal
is overcome, and the SAME SOLIDITY
AND' STRENGTH produced ai from
one-third to one half of the usual
cost of solid cases. This process is
ot the most simple nature, as fol
lows: a plate of niekle composition
mvtal, especially adapted to the pur
pose, has two plates of SOLID GOLD
soldered one on each side. The three
are then passed between polished
steel rollers, and the result is a strip
of heavy plated composition, from
which the cases, nacks, centres, bez
els, &c., are cut and shaped by suita
ble dies and formers. The gold in
these cases is sufficiently thick to
admit of all kinds of chasing, di
ving enamelling; the engraved
cases have been carried until worn
perfectly smooth by time.and use
without removing the gold.
This is the only case made with two
plates of solid gold and warranted by
special certificate.
