fathers saw fit, in the exercise of their
lofty righto, tb publish me among
others as a defaulter as a street com
missioner, to the amount of six dol
lars and eighty-three cents for the
year 188Ti It is true they did explain
the deficit in a bungiesome way at
the last of the article, but the report
does mean injustice and was unkind]
whether it originated in malice or
ignorance I know not, but I know
this, that the charge that I was a de
faulter as street commissioner is ut
terly false and unfounded in-fact.
The way I came to owe the town
six dollars and eighty-three cents was
this ^ The Tax Collector passing my
store one day, I asked him to give
me my tax receipts, and if my ser
vices to the town did not pay it he
could call on me for the balance, he
not knowing at the time what my
salary would be, and neither did I.
as I was elected for an unexpired
term and did not know the date, but
both believing that the salary would
more than cover it, and he knowing
I would make it right handed them
to me and I have them now, and I sop-
pose the balance of six dollars and
eighty*three cents' due Mr, Walston
as tax collector, is part of his deficit
which is charged to him. I knew no
better, as the tax collector did not
come for the balance but supposed
that the salary more than covered the
taxes until Mr. Gienn bilked to me
about It and I remarked if I was due
anything as.taxes to tlie town, send
(JoWn the account and I will pay it.
I never handled adollar of the town’s
money—not even my own salary ex
cept as above stated—none of it ever
passed through my hands, so I could
not have had any deficit whatever to
account for. But the gentlemen com'
prising so honorable a body as our
Council ought to be, it seems did not
know the difference between a de
faulting tax payer and a defaulting
officer. The balance on tax was paid
as soon as presented.
