THE, Montgomery Advertiser of July 81 says: “From nearly all por tions of this county, nnd from every section of the cotton belt comes the unwelcome reports of the appearance of the cotton worm. In many places they are “webbing up,” and prepar ing to pome out In greater numbers f.lton ever. The crop is said to be la ter than usual, and as the pests have appeared earlier than usual, fears are entertained that the damage to the cotton crop may be serious. Whore Ihey arc so numerous it would be idle to hope that the crop will escape with out great damage, although the pro tracted dry weather, injurious in it self, is not without compensating ad vantages, os if te unfavorable to the increase of the worms. The planters arc contending against both, and try ing to make the bast of tha situation. The only recourse of the planter in this^ dilemma is ihc prompt, and if necessary repeated applies tion of poi son, before the coming of a wet spell, which tend to Increase the worms and will wash away the poison from the cotton plants.” her illustrious lather while ilvinr and revered while dead, had award to him the pleasing task of convey ing to her from them a gentle token of the faithful allegiance which her father enjoyed and the warm admira tion they felt for her. He became el oquent as he .proceeded with hi? theme, and closed by saying that “never, since the days of nncientchiv- . airy, did gallant knight crown a fair er queen,” and handed her a velvet case containing a handsome gold watch and chain. She stood up bravely under the firing ordeal, during which old sol diers’ eye? were blinded by unre strained tears, and turning to the sea of faces she said, with beautiful com posure : “Dear friends, I can’t begin to tell you how happy vou have made me and how grateful I feel to you for it. I assure you that I love you as dearly as my father did, and I sjncereiy hope that you may always lie as happy as you have made me feel to-day.” A? she bowed her ac knowledgments, the giant oaks trem bled under the deafening shouts that went up from a thousand throats and the boom of the artillery. A Missile Thrown at the President. A Washington special to the New Orleans Times-Democrat says that last. Saturday night the Pennsylvania Railroad train, on which the Presi dent was a passenger, had just left the Gunpowder Bridge, sixteen miles north of Baltimore, on its way South when there came crashing through the plate-glass window of the Presi dent’s car, a stone nearly as large as an egg, which struck the flagman. Charles Sparks, on his left cheek. The President, at the time, was about midway of the ear, some ten feet be hind where Sparks was sitting. Per haps this will be claimed ns the ful fillment of the prediction of Zaidkel, the London astrologist, for July, which rends: “The President of the United Statesv. ilibeiu personal dan ger at the latter nart of the month, and he should take precautions ac cordingly.” or'f • i -*_5 iPi £t yt-i.
