July 81 says: “From nearly all por
tions of this county, nnd from every
section of the cotton belt comes the
unwelcome reports of the appearance
of the cotton worm. In many places
they are “webbing up,” and prepar
ing to pome out In greater numbers
f.lton ever. The crop is said to be la
ter than usual, and as the pests have
appeared earlier than usual, fears are
entertained that the damage to the
cotton crop may be serious. Whore
Ihey arc so numerous it would be idle
to hope that the crop will escape with
out great damage, although the pro
tracted dry weather, injurious in it
self, is not without compensating ad
vantages, os if te unfavorable to the
increase of the worms. The planters
arc contending against both, and try
ing to make the bast of tha situation.
The only recourse of the planter in
this^ dilemma is ihc prompt, and if
necessary repeated applies tion of poi
son, before the coming of a wet spell,
which tend to Increase the worms
and will wash away the poison from
the cotton plants.”

A Missile Thrown at the President.
A Washington special to the New
Orleans Times-Democrat says that
last. Saturday night the Pennsylvania
Railroad train, on which the Presi
dent was a passenger, had just left
the Gunpowder Bridge, sixteen miles
north of Baltimore, on its way South
when there came crashing through
the plate-glass window of the Presi
dent’s car, a stone nearly as large as
an egg, which struck the flagman.

hind where Sparks was sitting. Per
haps this will be claimed ns the ful
fillment of the prediction of Zaidkel,
the London astrologist, for July,

The dry wea ther during June and
July was the prime cause of the great
falling off in prospect. Large por
tions of the State have had no good
rains singe the 2ild of April. The
southCrii half of the State, generally,
enjoyed good se:isons up to July 4th,
and tiio hot dry winds since that date

prospect is most gloomy in North
had Middle Georgia, as these sections

caterpillars of consequence, though a
few correspondents in Southwest
Georgia are apprehensive of serious
damage from caterpillars.

W. A. Skidmore, who has just re
turned from Sierra county, informs
us that a remarkably rich quartz
boulder, weighing lb:) pounds, was
hydrauiieked out of the bank of the
Nevada Hydraulic Company at Gib-

ance of being ground in a pot-hole.

The Augusta (G:\.) Chronicle is la
boring hard to get up a narrow gauge
railroad boom in that State, and In
this is rendering good service to the
State. Whatever may bosaid as to
the capacity or tiiedesirabiiitv of nar
row gauges as great trunk lines,' tj»$re
is no question that as local roads atfd
feeders for through lines, they have
decided advantages, especially in
rough otkl broken country, where
high hills have to be cutaway, ciiasms
eroesed and numerous streams bridg
ed. Where the narrow gauge has
l»een thoroughly tested, even in com
petition with established broad gauge
through lines, it has been proved not
(inly to hold its own, but to take the
lead, and consequently the number
of them is annually increasing, nnd
